This was a very frustrating game for the girls, they realized that they could play with Oroville, but it was too late by the time they figured it out. Once again we got off to a not so good start ending the first quarter down 8-1. We got things going late in the first quarter and after being down 18-4 we closed the gap to 18-10 at the half, and felt pretty good about things.
In second half it just wasn't meant to be, Oroville was very big and physical and we really struggled to get into our offense and some nights the close calls just don't go your way; and this was one of those nights. The girls did play hard throughout the game and in the fourth quarter decided to get a little physical themselves making it a lot of fun to see the girls improvement in one game. It was really good to see the girls learn from some of their mistakes in the first half. We feel like this should be a much different game at our place next, but we also realize we really need to cut down on the turnovers (31) and find a way to get more shots at the hoop (only 29.)
For the third straight game of the season Yessenia had a great game at the defensive end of the floor. She had 8 rebounds, 1 assist, 2 steals and 4 points. Sierra Miller came off the bench with a lot of intensity tonight playing her best defense of the year. She finished with 2 rebounds in the game. Angelica Suarez also had one of her best games of the year. She got tossed in 3 points, grabbed 3 rebounds, dished out 1 assist and had 2 steals while she was not one bit intimidated by Oroville's size. Veronica Vanderholm drew the tough assignment of guarding Oroville's best player; and while she struggled in the first half she held Hughes to only 4 free throws in the second half! Veronica finished with 8 points, 5 rebounds and 1 assist. Ofelia Rodriguez came in and helped handle the ball a little against the press and finished with 5 rebounds and 3 steals for the game. Hailey Ellsworth had a hard time getting shots up tonight because Oroville knew where she was on the floor all game long, she is seeing this more and more throughout the season. Hailey is doing a good job of getting the ball to others for open shots, and making her presence known at the defensive end of the floor. Hailey scored 11 points (including 1 three ball,) pulled down 4 rebounds, dished out 4 assists and stole the ball twice all the while handling the ball the entire game.
