Goats win again... headed to the state semifinals
by Richard Uhlhorn
The Chelan Goats and the Omak Pioneers played their hearts out on Saturday afternoon with the Goats persevering for a 27-22 victory and a trip to the semi-finals in state 1A football for the first time in the school's history.
It was a game that had the fans on both sides of the field on pins and needles. Omak got on the scoreboard quickly when C.J. Lockwood broke a few tackles and scampered downfield for a touchdown with 10:08 to play in the first quarter.
Prior to the game, many Chelan football fans enjoyed several tailgate parties in the parking lot.
Six minutes later, Chelan answered when quarterback Michael Amsel Jr. hit Aaron McQuaid for a touchdown to even up the score. In the second quarter with 9:02 remaining before the half, Amsel successfully passed to Robin Weathersby for Chelan's second touchdown of the game.
Then in the third quarter of play, Amsel kept the ball and dove over the opposing line to score Chelan's third touchdown of the game, giving the Goats a comfortable 21-7 lead and that is when this football game got interesting.
The Chelan cheer squad gave a great show during halftime of the game.
With 53 seconds remaining to play in the third quarter, C.J. Lockwood scampered 11 yards into the end zone for the Pioneers second touchdown. Omak then caught Chelan's kickoff team flatfooted with an onside kick that they recovered. "Our guys weren't ready for that," said Coach Darren Talley.
A pass play put Omak back into a scoring position and with 10:40 remaining to play, the Pioneers scored again. On the point after, Chelan was offside on the after point kick which gave Omak an opportunity for a two point conversion, which they were successful.
All of the sudden, it was Omak's game to win. They were ahead 22-21, but then Amsel pulled down an interception and on the next play hits McQuaid again for a nice 25 yard gainer. Cole Schwartz ran the ball to the 25 yard line and on the next play Amsel is intercepted again.
The Chelan defense forced Omak to turn the ball over at the 23 yard line and with only 1:36 remaining, Amsel passed to Weathersby for another Chelan touchdown, putting the Goats in the lead 27-22.
A few Chelan fans resorted to the Gods to have this game turn out in Chelan's favor.
Omak fought back and was threatening to score one more time when Amsel intercepted an Omak pass with only 28 seconds remaining.
Chelan was able to run two ground plays and run the clock out for the victory. The Chelan fans let out a sigh of relief and are looking forward to next week's semi final game against the winner of the Connell/Riverview game that played too late on Saturday to be listed.
The next game will take place in Moses Lake on Saturday, November 28, beginning at 1 p.m.
