Coach Scott Ward reports….
After getting off to a very slow start in the first quarter the boys finally put it in the next gear and never looked back for the remainder of the game. The game started with a 3-point make by Michael Valencia and, unfortunately, that was the last time the ball went through the hoop for Manson for the rest of the first quarter. It was the slowest start we had all year and we just looked very flat. On the other hand, Soap Lake came out very hot hitting the first 5 shots they attempted.
Soap Lake did a very good job breaking our press early and capitalizing on 3 on 2 and 2 on 1 situation. In the second quarter we regrouped and never lost our composer, out scoring Soap Lake 16 to 10 and going into half time down by 3, 19 to 22. I felt really confident at the half that if we just continued to play our style of basketball that the outcome would speak for itself. That’s exactly what happened.
We came out in the third quarter and played “in your face” defense, holding Soap Lake to 2 points in the third quarter and 8 points in the fourth. We controlled the boards on both ends of the floor and didn’t turn the ball over. The result of the intense team effort was our boys outscoring Soap Lake by 18 points in the second half and getting the victory in front of the home crowd for the last home game of the year. I really hope that the boys are proud of themselves and the way they performed in their last home game. I know that I am and I’m confident that the fans really appreciated their determination.
Our scoring was led by Abran Grajeda with 13, Miguel Lopez with 12, and Jacob Cleveland finished with 9 points. Defensively, Michael Valencia, David Sedano, and Ty Harding gave the team some great minutes and really sparked the comeback. Danny Luna, Nathan Coggins, and Ammon Simmons, once again, played their role by dominating the rebounding on both ends of the floor and not allowing any easy baskets. When we play as a team and everybody does their job good things happen.
Great job guys!
This was the 2nd and final regular season game against Soap Lake in which we finished with a record of 2 and 0. Our next game is in Oroville on 2/13/09. This should be a great rematch and opportunity for us to rebound after experiencing a tough double overtime loss to the Hornets back in January.
