Goat wrestlers still undefeated with

43-27 win over Lake Roosevelt

Tuesday night’s wrestling match against the Lake Roosevelt Raiders was Chelan’s final home match of the year. Seniors Steven Swinford, Tyson McGuffin and Jesse Allen and their parents were honored for their dedication over the past four years. (See photos in photo gallery).

Matches began with Jacob Przepolewski (103 lbs.) moving up to 112 pounds to take on Daniel Laplante. “We had a wrestler not make weight (Dillon Parker),” said Coach Jay McGuffin. “That forced us to move some matches around.” Przepolewski found himself in a tough battle that he never quit on, but he ended up in several near fall situations and lost the decision to Laplante 7-0.

Hank Burton (119 lbs.) faced Lake Roosevelt’s Randy Gross and battled to a 2-4 deficit in the first round. Gross was able to score on a two back points in the second round to go ahead 2-6. Burton picked up a stalling point and then Gross scored on a takedown to go into the lead 8-3, but Burton continued to battle it out and scored two on reversal and two back points to lose the decision by only one point, 7-8.

Micah Hargrove (125 lbs.) had probably one of the tougher battles of the evening when he faced off with Ann Thomas. Thomas, one of the few girls wrestling in the CTL this year has been wrestling for four long years. It is always tough for a male wrestler to face off against a female wrestler especially when that wrestler is experienced and tough. “I always tell my guys to go out and just wrestle as tough as they can,” said Coach McGuffin. It didn’t take long for Hargrove to begin scoring and by the third round, he had worn Thomas down and scored a fall over her.

Erik Jimenez (130 lbs.) moved into the varsity ranks for the evening and faced Kasey Green. Jimenez lost by pin in the first round.

At 135 pounds, Jose Garcia proved once again that he is capable of beating anyone in the CTL by pinning Brandon Buche in the first round of his match.

Gage Schmidt (140 lbs.), Steven Swinford (145 lbs.) and Jesse Allen (171 lbs.) all drew forfeits on the night.

Tyson McGuffin (152 lbs.) had a tremendous match against Shane Birdtail. Birdtail scored first on a takedown, but McGuffin escaped to put a point on the board and then scored on a takedown of his own to go out front 3-2. Birdtail escaped to tie the match at 3-all. McGuffin took him down again for two more and Birdtail scored on a reverse to tie the match at 5-all. By the end of round one, McGuffin reversed the reverse and ended up in the lead 7-5. In the second round, McGuffin received a point for an illegal hold, scored another reversal and by the end of the match had almost pinned Birdtail winning by a 18-8 major decision.

Jorge Villasenor (160 lbs.) lost by pin to Cole Stanger.

Davey Anderson (189 lbs.) took on Cole Stanger’s older brother, Brian and found himself in a tremendous battle for supremacy, finally losing the match 3-4.

The final match of the evening was in the 103 pound classification. Dilbert Guillan faced off with Best Sophonsirinun and won a well deserved 4-2 decision.

Coach McGuffin thanked the crowd for all of their support this year at the end of the match. “We have won eight league matches, losing none. A lot of that success goes to you for the support you have given us,” he said.

Scott Hargrove won a drawing to pick the best wrestling fan of the year. He received one night at the Best Western-Lake Chelan and dinner for two at Campbell’s Resort. Phyllis Gleasman was the runner up and received a night’s stay at the Midtowner and lunch at Latte Da Coffee Stop Café.

Coach McGuffin told the crowd to wish the team well in Omak on Thursday night. “We are going for out second consecutive League Championship,” said McGuffin.

The problem is that Omak has only lost one duo match this year and goes into the final match on their home court with a 7-1 record. Chelan doesn’t want to share the title with time, so they are going to have to come out tough in order to win the League title.

The match will be held on Thursday night, January 24, in Omak.
