“It was a good weekend,” said Chelan Wrestling Coach Martin Mitchell. “It was fun.”
The weekend he’s referring to is the Mat Classic in the Tacoma Dome. This year five Chelan wrestlers qualified for the big show. The wrestlers included: Ivan Reyes (126 lbs.); Jairo De La Cruz (145 lbs.); Julian Buyas (145 lbs.); Ty Schwartz (152 lbs.); and Carlos Montes (285 lbs.)
Ivan Reyes won his first match on Friday against Brycen Trask of Kiahowya in an 11-4 decision, but lost his second match to Carlos Hernandez of Royal by fall in 5:38 of the third round. This put him against Trysten Davila of Lakeside and Reyes won this tough battle with a 6-5 decision.
Unfortunatly Reyes lost his next two matches to finish eighth in the State. These loses were to Aaron Kladuder of Deer Park by fall in the first round and to Abraham Medina of Royal in an 11-3 decision. “Ivan was at the top of his game all year,” said Coach Mitchell.
Chelan qualified two wrestlers at 145 pounds; Jairo De La Cruz and Julian Buyas.
Jairo won his first match by fall in 3:17 over Ben Patrick of Castle Rock, but then lost to Sultan’s Cory Martinez in a tough 10-5 decision. “It was a tough that Julian and Jairo had to wrestle each other,” said Coach Martin. Jairo defeated the younger Buyas 11-0 and then lost to Gabe Wallis of Kalamah 9-4 and lost again in the battle for 5thand 6th place to Brandon Speed of Kalamah 10-6 and ended up 6th in the State.
Julian Buyas lost his first match in a 5-3 decision to Fork’s Javier Contraras, but came back to score a pin in 2:12 over Payton Berry of Cascade Christian. This put him into the match against teammate Jairo De La Cruz which he lost. In his battle for 7th & 8th, Julian lost to Jeremiah Crunk of Mt. Baker in a very tough overtime match 5-3.
At 152 pounds, Ty Schwartz won his first match against Connell’s Brandon Chavez in a tough 12-11 match. Ty then lost to Shawn Godinho of Castle Rock in a 9-0 decision and then lost to Bram Schweiger of Freeman 3-2.
Carlos Montes lost his first match to Gavin Brumley of Naches Valley by fall in 1:35. He went on to defeat Dylan Kite of sultan by fall in 4:45 of the third round, but lost to Riley Noohan of Tenino by fall in 5:39 of overtime. “You can’t get any closer than that,” said Coach Mitchell.
“In the end, I was happy with them. They have nothing to be ashamed of,” said Coach Mitchell. “We had a very successful year and everyone got better. They were all beating people on the mat that we lost to early in the season. They all improved over the year immensely.”
While the season has ended for the varsity wrestlers, Coach Martin is hoping to attract them to a GRECO style wrestling team in May. “My hope is to qualify some of the wrestlers for the Washington State National Team competition in July in North Dakota.”
Martin feels that putting in that extra time in a strong free style program will help make the high school varsity team stronger. “That’s what typically happens,” said Martin.
He is also coaching the youth wrestling program this year and has landed the assistant coaching job with Coach Ken Barnes at the middle school level.
