It is a well deserved honor for Ken Barnes to be nominated for the 2014/15 Head Middle School Coach of the Year by Chelan High School head coach, Martin Mitchell.

Mitchell nominated Barnes at the Regional Wrestling Tournament on February 14 and on Saturday evening, February 21, at the Mat Classic in the Tacoma Dome, it was announced that Barnes had been voted as the Middle School Coach of the Year by his peers.

Barnes has been coaching Middle School wrestlers for many years at Chelan and his consistent coaching of these young wrestlers is what makes them so valuable when they reach the high school wrestling program.

Coach Mitchell is in his first year as Chelan’s wrestling coach and has been impressed with Barnes’ commitment to youth and kids at the Chelan schools. “He has been a familiar face to me as I grew up, but it wasn’t until this year teaching at the High School that I got to know him as a teacher and coach. He is an amazing teacher.”

Mitchell was able to get the Middle School Assistant Wrestling Coach position and has been working with Ken with the Middle School wrestlers. “He’s very dedicated and works hard putting in the extra time to make them successful,” said Mitchell

Barnes and Mitchell have been playing to their individual strengths in coaching. “I’m showing them new techniques and what I want kids to bring to the high school program so they can wrestle like seniors when they are only freshmen.”

Barnes’ has been coaching the Middle School kids for over 20 years. “He loves what he’s doing and it has an effect on the kids and team.”

“I was very pleased to nominate him and he is a very deserving coach.”
