Chelan beats Cascade for chance at District Championship
Chelan will play Bulldogs in Cashmere Saturday evening
by Richard Uhlhorn

“Cashmere is a great rivalry,” said a happy Coach Joe Harris. “The crazy part is that it is a one and done deal between two of the best teams in the State.” Coach Harris and the Chelan Goats have been here before with Cashmere with the only difference being that the decimated Caribou Trail League only has one slot at the State Tournament.

“We played outstanding basketball from the get-go,” said Harris about the Goats 54-28 win over the Cascade Kodiaks on Thursday night, February 19. It was also a one and done game and Cascade’s season ended at the hands of a relentless team effort on both sides of the court by Chelan. “I told the guys to believe that anything is possible,” said Harris. “I’ve been preaching defense and the way we play it will give fits to any team.”

While Chelan jumped out to a 12-5 lead by the end of the first quarter and went to the break ahead 20-11, it wasn’t until the second half that Chelan showed up on the offensive side. In the low scoring first half (Chelan only shot .241 from the field in the first half; .250 from the three point line) the Goats kept Cascade at bay with an aggressive defense that created turn-over after turn-over and forced the Kodiaks into poor shots.

At the start of the third period the Kodiaks were only nine points back and well within striking distance of the Goats lead, but Chelan’s defense only allowed the Kodiaks three points while extending their lead by 25 points, 39-14.

Luke Gleasman, despite being injured with a cut next to the eye, carried the game with a game high 15 points, followed by a tremendous outing by Hank Hollingsworth who added 13 points, but also pulled down 10 rebounds and had four blocks. Kyle James only had three points, but pulled down 12 rebounds and had 4 assists. Ivan Rodriquez had a horrible shooting game with only six points out of 3-11 shooting but he also had six assists.

Cascade suffered from turnovers, 24 to Chelan’s 13. Cascade was able to get a little offense going in the fourth quarter, but the Goats basically shut them down to take away the needed victory 54-28 to face arch rivals Cashmere. In the three games so far this year, Cashmere has bested Chelan twice. Chelan won the first game 57-48 and then lost the next two 45-57 and 46-55, both of which were much closer than the scores indicate.

Like Coach Harris said after the game, “I’ve been telling them to believe that anything’s possible.” The win over Cascade will take the Goats into the game Saturday on a high note.
