Chelan wrestling team to take five to Mat Classic
by Richard Uhlhorn

Chelan Wrestling Coach Martin Mitchell is excited with the upcoming Mat Classic State Wrestling Championships this coming weekend in the Tacoma Dome. Five wrestlers qualified at last weekend’s Regional Wrestling Championships to move on and compete in the largest high school sporting event in the Nation.

“Our region is probably the toughest region in the State and if you make it out of our region, the chances of becoming a State placer is high,” said Mitchell. “There were multiple state placers from last year that didn’t make it out of the regional tournament this year. The weight classes were so deep.”

Senior Juan Garcia (170 lbs.), a 4th place state wrestlet last year, and was a potential State Wrestling Champion this year, but unfortunately separated his ribs in the regional semi-final match. “He was hurt pretty bad,” said Mitchell. “He tried to wrestle in the next match to qualify but was pinned.” This put Garcia in the 5th or 6th place bracket, but Mitchell pulled him and he lost by Injury Default. “He was ranked third in the state and he tried as hard as he could to quality. It was a heartbreaking injury and he was capable of becoming a state champion.”

Qualifying this year for the State Championships are:

  • Ivan Reyes (126 lbs.) – 2nd place in Regionals

  • Jairo de la Cruz (145 lbs.) – 1st place

  • Julian Buyas (145 lbs.) – 3rd place

  • Ty Schwartz (152 lbs.) – 3rd place

  • Carlos Montes (285 lbs.) 3rd place

“They should all do well,” said Mitchell. “We have high expectations. The State Bracket is out and it looks pretty good for us.”

“I am proud of every single one of our guys.” Mitchell stated that it was a great weekend. “The guys left it on the mat and that’s all I asked of them. There was nothing to be upset about.”

Mat Classic takes place this coming Friday and Saturday at the Tacoma Dome. If you are interested in watching the results, they will be updated daily on the WIAA website. Go to WIAA.com, click on Athletics, Wresting and look for the brackets for each individual weight. Below is the schedule.
