Chelan Goats play tough in loss to Wenatchee Panthers

It was a great night of basketball for basketball fans, but a tough night for the Chelan Goats who loss to the 4A Wenatchee High School Panthers 44-41.

This game game right down to the end with either team capable of picking up a well deserved win over the other.

This game was tied at 41-all with only 6.9 seconds remaining to play. Neither team was able to add a field goal, but Hank Hollingsworth committed a foul with 3.7 the lead 43-41. One more foul game Wenatchee a three point advantage 44-41.

With .1 seconds remaining the ball was put in to Mason McClellan who immediately tried to tie the game with a three point shot that rattled off the rim for a miss at the buzzer.

By the end of the first quarter of play, Chelan was behind 14-10, but in the second quarter, Chelan’s pressure defense helped them pull back into the game.

Mason McClellan hit a field goal to bring Cbelan to within two points and on the very next possession hit a three pointer to take Chelan into the lead 19-16. Luke Gleasman hit a field goal to put Chelan on top 21-18, but that lead was erased quickly by Wenatchee who hit a field goal to get within one point but added a free throw on a blocking foul to take them into the lead 23-21 at the half.

After the break, Wenatchee extended their lead to 29-23, but Chelan fought back to a 29-32 deficit and then McClellan nailed another three point shot to tie the game at 32-all.

The game came down to the final seconds in the fourth quarter and could have gone either way.

Mason McClellan led the Goats with 12 points followed by Hank Hollingsworth who added 10. Hollingsworth also had a great night rebounding the ball over the Panthers. Ivan Rodriquez drove the basket scoring 8 points on the evening followed by Luke Gleasman and Donny Watson scoring 4 each. Off the bench, Bryce Robison had 2 points and Eli Jenkins made one of two free throws to keep Chelan in this game at the end.

Eastmont’s Gavin Long had 15 and Grady Miller added 13. At point guard, Christian Solovey added 8 points.

These games are important for Caribou Trail League teams who only have four competing teams for the one shot at the playoffs. Currently, Chelan leads the league with a win over Omak. The Goats will host Republic on Tuesday, January 13 with tip-off around 7:30 p.m.
