Chelan wrestlers bounce back from Warden meet at Cashmere Invitational… take second place

Prior to the Christmas break, the Chelan Goat Wrestling team participated in what Chelan Wrestling Coach Martin Mitchell called more of a “Mix ‘n Match” than a dual meet. The Goats met up with Okanogan, Brewster and Pateros on December 18. “We didn’t have a formal dual meet,” said Mitchell. “We just matched up wrestlers based on ability. It was good because there were a lot of really good matches and very few mis-matches throughout the night.”
Mitchell reported that every wrestler was able to get a competitive match through the process which was beneficial for all the programs. “We had a very successful night and were able to get many wrestlers matches that may not have been able to wrestle if we had stuck to a formal dual meet format,” reported Mitchell.
Mitchell and the other coaches agreed that it was more important to get mat time for all of the wrestlers than to go to the dual meet format where it would be one person per weight class on the mat.
On Saturday, December 20, the Goats traveled to Cashmere for its Invitational which included teams from Chewelah, Reardan, Omak, Cle Elem, Cashmere, Quincy, Mt. Baker, Cascade and Lake Roosevelt.
“I’m still waiting on the brackets but I can tell you that we had a great day of wrestling,” said Mitchell. “Our guys bounced back just the way I expected them to after the match we had on Wednesday (See GLC’s Sports Page for that match.).
The team scores from the tournament are as follows:
1st – Chewalah with 179 points
2nd - Chelam, 132.5 pts.
3rd - Reardan, 114.5 pts.
4th – Omak,. 114 pts.

“Our Varsity wrestlers stepped up and wrestled great throughout the day and many of our JV wrestlers were able to get into the tournament and gain valuable experience on the Varsity level in a Varsity tournament,” said Mitchell “This experience is going to benefit our wrestlers in the post season because we get two wrestlers per weight class automatically entered into the district tournament.”
“I was excited to see Juan Garcia continue his undefeated season thus far at 170.” Mitchell said the performance at 113 pounds was incredible, getting both our Varsity and JV wrestlers into the finals. “Marc Nimz was a highlight in the tournament getting the crowd going with a pin in his first ever tournament top 3 finish to take home the bronze medal!”
Other wrestlers competing on Saturday were Alex Gavin 120, Gio Reyes 138, Dane Schwartz 160, Jesus Garcia 160, Hayden Habich 170, Francisco Arteaga 220 and Dalton Dietrich 220
