Associate Head Coach Tracy Williams said after the game with the Republic Lady Tigers on Tuesday evening that the Tigers proved they were a legitimate state contender. Beating the Goats was no easy task, but the win extended the Tigers record on the season to 12-0. “They are well coached,” said Coach Steve Nygreen. “They shot very well and we had too many turnovers. I hope we can play a little better defensively in our next game.”
Chelan also had a poor shooting percentage during the second half. “A lot of the shots we took are usually made,” said Nygreen.
Chelan jumped out to a 7-4 lead to begin the game, but it wasn’t long before Republic settled down to begin nipping away at Chelan’s lead and by the end of the first quarter of play, the Lady Tigers were up 16-13.
After their first timeout, Republic began to play a slower more methodical game, setting up their plays and getting the ball inside for layups. In the second half, Republic extended their lead to 24-17 while Chelan missed a number of good looks. By the end of the half, Chelan was with in striking distance and went to the locker room down by 5, 29-24.
After the break, Chelan was still having problems getting the ball to go through the hoop while Republic kept setting up and making the small shot. By the end of the third, Chelan was behind by 11 points and it didn’t get any better in the fourth quarter as they tried and tried to bring their shooting percentage up.
Chelan was led in scoring by a hard charging Drew Morris who pumped in 13 followed by Emma Stockholm who had 11 on a tough night for the forward. The rest of the team added to the score with 3 and 4 points each.
Republic’s Sierra McQuay, a senior, put 17 points on the board for a game high scoring spree. Cassady Reeves had 13 and Lily Beckwith had 11 for the Lady Tigers.
At the end of the game it was Republic that left the floor the victor with a resounding win 60-41.
“They were a state qualifier last year and I would expect them to be back this year,” said Nygreen. In the meantime, Chelan has its work cut on the practice court as they get ready to face the Cashmere Lady Bulldogs at home on Friday night with tipoff at 6 p.m.
