Chelan’s cross-country team has had a good year. Last Thursday, October 30, the girls took first place against a ranked Cascade team and will attend the State Tournament in Pasco this coming Saturday as a team. Individually, Mereck Palazzo won the boys race and will be joined at the State tournament by Dillon Dawson.

It was a dreary and drizzly day up at the Chelan Golf Course during the District Cross-Country Championships, but that didn’t bother the runners who seemed to relish the cooler, rainy weather.

Coach Mark Anderson was pleased with the effort his girl’s cross-country team put in at the District XC meet at the Chelan Municipal Golf Course last Thursday afternoon, October 30. “They ran particularly well,” said Coach Anderson. “They were unranked coming in and beat Cascade who were ranked fourth in the state.”

“It’s a pretty young group of kids. They have the potential to be really good in years to come.” Anderson feels that that the team will be really competitive at the State Championships. “I think we’ll be in the top 8 out of the 16 teams,” he said.

On the way to State are:

2nd Place -Allie Barnes – 20:08.8
3rd Place – Addison Ivory – 20.11.8
6th Place – Jessica Oules – 20:28.9
7th Place – Daisy Campos – 20:29.6
9th Place – Olivia Nygreen – 20:45.0
10th Place- Drew Morris – 20:50.1
12th Place – Kali Van Rusen – 20:22.2
22nd Place – Guadelupe Galvan – 23:09.8
 Emma Elsner as an alternate.

On the boys side of the District championships, only two made the cut for the State Championships.

Mereck Palazzo ran a 16:248 to take first place on Thursday. “He was running second and ran a very good tactical race with a devastating kick at the end to win it,” said Anderson. “He has the potential to be really good.”

Anderson said that pressure of racing with 150 other cross-country runners will be key. “It is a compilation of the best athletes, but he could be right up there with the winners.”

The team travels to Pasco on Friday and will compete at the Sun Willows Golf Course.
