Chelan Goats roll over Wahluke 27-8 in non-league game

Chelan opened up its football game with Wahluke with a very physical game on both sides of the scrimmage line. The Warriors and Goats battled back and forth for the first six minutes when Chelan scored the its first touchdown with 5:33 left to play in the first quarter.

Wahluke answered with 1:58 left in the first quarter with a sustained drive to score its first touchdown. The Warriors ran for a two-point conversion which put them ahead of Chelan by one point, 8-7.

Early in the second quarter Chelan scored again, but missed the point after. With the score 10-8, Wahluke marched back down the field, but the Goats forced them into a field goal attempt from the 17 yard line which failed

By the end of the first half, Chelan was up 20-8. Watson had one interception with 10 minutes remaining in the game and ran it for 50 yards to the 26 yard line.

Throughout the game, Wahluke’s offense was keyed on a running game and it just didn’t work against Chelan’s defense. “They had an offense, but wejust took it away with our scheme,” wrote Coach Travis Domser. “We had the effort and played physical.”

Chelan’s Mason McClellan had another outstanding game carrying the ball 16 times for 161 yards and two touchdowns. Julian Buyas added one touchdown on eight carries and 33 yards. Tony Padilla scored a touchdown from the six yard line on one carry.

The passing game resulted in 29 yards on three completions out of eight attempts. Overall, the team had 306 total yards of offense and 11 first downs.

Defensively, the team was very physical with Julian Buyas chalking up 10 tackles.

Francisco Arteaga, Hayden Habich and Tony Padilla played excellent football on the defensive side of the scrimmage line.

Chelan travels to Cascade this coming Friday night to take on the Kodiaks. Cascade enters this league match-up with a 4-2 record to Chelan’s 3-3 record. With the way Chelan is playing, this game should be a good one.
