Girls’ Basketball: Waterville 41– Manson 30

Coach Kurt Toolson

The Manson girls’ basketball team traveled to Waterville on Tuesday, January 7th. It was our first game in 2 1/2 weeks after winter break. The Trojans lost by a final score of 41-30. The game turned on outside shooting, as most of the other stats in the game were equal. However, the Shockers shot 6-13 from the 3 point arc, whereas the Trojans were only 1-13. This was especially true in the 3rd quarter when Waterville made 4 of their 3 pointers to open the game up after a tight first half.

I was pleased with the girls as they played hard the whole game, even outscoring their opponents by 6 in the final period to reward their efforts. There were several improvements from our previous matchup to highlight. We did a more efficient job of handling their press, which eliminated many of their easy baskets off our turnovers. Along those same lines, we did better getting back in defensive transition, making Waterville work for their points. The girls also did a better job running our offense, resulting in some nice passes and layins, especially in the first half.

Here are some individual statistics:

Baylee Ward- 4 steals and 7 deflections, really worked hard at the top of our zone.

Jana Russell- 5 assists, which is the most assists I have had a player get in the 3 years I have coached.

Raechel Vanderholm-leading rebounder with 5

Davia Walters- an efficient 3 for 3 from the field

Kendra Ellsworth- super sub of the game, scoring 6 points off of several strong post ups.

Ruby Garcia had a good game in limited minutes, getting 3 rebounds and 3 steals.

Our next match up is at home against White Swan on Friday, January 10th. They are clearly the top team in our league and will be a huge challenge for us, as they are experienced, big, and fast.

Coach Helleson reports:

Game Location: At Waterville

Score: 31-49

Recap: Our boys were more competitive this time around with Waterville, however too many turnovers and a failure to capitalize on fast breaks is where we fell short. After a strong first quarter we became sloppy with the ball and produced a turnover on a staggering 50% of our possessions in the 2nd quarter to fall behind by 16. We continued to struggle early in the 3rd where a strong final quarter and a half prevented us from coming back. Chris McFadden led us with 10 points and Bo Charlton scored 8 points and 6 rebounds. Next up is White Swan for our first league game.
