Five qualify for District Tennis in Cashmere

Results from Day 2 of the CTL Tournament (Saturday, May 17), the qualifier for the District 6 Tournament next week:

Thursday had been an immensely successful first day of the tournament (Chelan had nearly twice as many athletes still competing as any other school), so we had high expectations for Saturday.  And yes, we had some "casualties" on Saturday, but day two was also very successful!  After a mix of hot sun and two rain delays, here are the details-

Girls Singles:
One of semifinals was an all-Chelan semifinal: Seniors Megan Robinson vs Shelby Dietrich.
Megan won the semifinal over Shelby, but lost the CTL final to Paiton Wagner of Cashmere.  Wagner is a nationally ranked player, and actually Megan was the first CTL player this year to win a game against Wagner.
Despite losing her semifinal match, Chelan's Dietrich came back to win her consolation semifinal 6-2, 6-0, but lost the consolation final to finish 4th.  Both Megan and Shelby will move on to the district tournament.

Girls Doubles:
Seniors Abby Phelps and Sarah Kunkel won their first match of the day over Okanogan to stay alive in the tournament.  Playing their best tennis of season, they nearly pulled off an upset over another highly seeded Okanogan team in their second match, but ended up losing in 3 sets.  In their final match of the day, a loser out match vs Omak, Sarah and Abby came up short.  Congratulations to Abby and Sarah for a great senior season, though!
Juniors Allie Schwantes and Vanessa Miller need to win their first match of the day to carry on, but couldn't quite pull out a victory over a tough Cascade opponent who ended up taking 4th.  After a rough first set, Allie and Vanessa finished the season strong in the 2nd set, despite the loss.

Boys Singles:
Junior Eli Jenkins coasted in his semifinal, beating a Cashmere opponent 6-0, 6-2.  Jenkins got off to a great start in the championship match, but ended up losing to the CTL Player of the Year, Chad Raven of Cashmere, 7-5, 6-0.  Taking 2nd, Eli will play in the district tournament.
Senior Bon Malana lost his semifinal to Raven of Cashmere, lost his consolation semifinal in a close three set match, and was eliminated in his third match of the day.  Bon also had a great senior season, and was one of the anchors of our team this year.
Beginning the day in the consolation bracket, freshman Bryce Robison won his first match to stay alive.  Bryce then won the consolation semifinal to  clinch a district berth, and finished a banner day by winning the consolation final in three sets to take 3rd.

Boys Doubles:
Seniors Matt Barnes and Javier Navarro needed a win to stay alive in their opening match, but were defeated by Okanogan.  However, like many Chelan players today, they played some of their best tennis of the season!
Brothers Tanner and Collin Hendricks also began the day in the consolation bracket and won their first match in comeback fashion to stay alive.  Tanner and Collin lost the consolation semifinal, placing them in winner 5th-loser out match.  The Hendricks boys defeated Okanogan in two sets to clinch a district tournament berth, and maybe avenge Matt and Javier's loss to that same opponent?

Chelan has 5 entrants moving on: Megan, Shelby, Eli, Bryce, Tanner-Collin. No team scores are kept for this tournament, but Chelan tied with Cashmere for the most district qualifiers in the CTL.  All of these players will play Tuesday and Saturday next week in Cashmere.

The outcome of the CTL Tournament also determines CTL All League, so here are your Chelan Tennis All League athletes:
