Coach Helleson reports:
In a heartbreaker, the Manson boys couldn’t quite overcome Bridgeport and lost 50-41 in overtime for the winner to regional’s / loser-out contest at Wenatchee HS. Every game this season with Bridgeport was a battle to the very end and for whatever reason we could never get over the hump. The game mirrored the Liberty Bell game as a poor 3rd quarter was again our undoing, followed by a furious 4th quarter rally to tie the game at 40 at the end of regulation. Paul Toolson got out of a mini-slump to hit two big 4th quarter 3 pointers and Salvador Leyva was relentless in his attacking of the basket.
I couldn’t be more proud of this group of guys. Although it is difficult to swallow two extremely close losses our guys did everything we asked of them. They put together their two best team defensive efforts and committed a season-low 8 turnovers against Bridgeport. Unfortunately, Bridgeport shot 90% from the free throw line, in contrast to our 50% and that proved to be the difference.
As the sting of the losses has begun to subside our guys have a lot to be proud of this season. There were little expectations for this group of guys with only minimal varsity experience and a last-minute brand new coach. But it was exciting to see a group of individuals come together and gel into such a cohesive unit. And as they began to rely on each other they began to experience success. I am so proud of our 5 seniors: Jesus Sanchez, Olegario Orozco, Jesse Russell, Salvador Leyva, and Paul Toolson.
This group will be remembered as the team that jumpstarted the Manson Boys’ Basketball Program. Their effort, competitive drive, and willingness to sacrifice the self for the greater good of the team have motivated the younger guys to achieve even greater heights.
Notable Stats: Paul Toolson: 14 points; Jesus Sanchez: 4 points, 4 steals (incredible individual defensive effort); Alex Vanderholm: 8 points, 12 rebounds; Salvador Leyva: 10 points, 9 rebounds, 3 steals.
It was an honor to coach this team and I want to thank all the parents and community members who got behind this team.
