In the boys 100m, the Liberty Bell runner, who was the favorite and ranked number 1 in state pulled up about 20 yards from the finish and collapsed on the track with an apparent hamstring injury. Our guys, (Jorge Tejada and Jesse Russell, I think), went back and helped him cross the finish line. All the other runners walked in with him as well. A really nice moment from the meet and was really proud of our guys for their show of sportsmanship.
Coach Toolson reports:
Under sweltering temperatures, the Manson track team competed in the CW2B North Division Sub-District Championships on Thursday in Oroville. The biggest news was the weather. With temperatures in the mid 90s, it was tough for all competitors to find the energy to do their best. It was just 10 days ago we had a track meet that the temperature was 50 degrees colder than that.
It was a good day overall for the Trojans. There were no unpleasant surprises or injuries and we managed to qualify a good number of athletes through to the district meet next weekend in Ephrata. We also came away with several division champions that should be recognized.
On the girls side, Itzel Castro won both the 100m and 200m dashes. Freshman Ruby Garcia won the discus throw.
