Lady Trojans 39 – Liberty Bell 27

Coach Kurt Toolson reports:

The Manson girls’ basketball defeated Liberty Bell Tuesday night by a score of 39-27. Manson used a stout defensive effort in the 1st half, holding Liberty Bell to just 6 points, to jump out to a 14 point lead at half time. The Mountain Lions made a bit of a run in the 3rd quarter, closing the gap to as little as 5, before Manson salted the game away in the 4th quarter.

The defensive effort was highlighted by getting 21 steals for the game. Other noteworthy stats include a season low 12 turnovers and a season best 8 assists.

Offensively there was still room for improvement as we shot just 30% from the field and 33% from the free throw line (including missing our last 8 in a row!).

Individually we were led once again by Itzel Castro who scored 23 points, 8 steals, 2 assists and 3 rebounds. Davia Walters had a nice game as well with 2 points, a team high 7 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal and 2 blocked shots. I also thought Jaque Guillen had a well-rounded game with 2 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals.

We play again on Thursday night at Oroville. They beat us rather handily in our first match up so we have our work cut out for us.

Coach Erik Helleson reports:

Record – League/Overall:  10-6 (6-3 league)

Significance of the game: League game

Individual highlights:  Alex Vanderholm:  12 points, 9 rebounds; Willy Picton:  8 rebounds

Team Highlights:  20 turnovers

We picked a poor time to lay an egg.  We never got into an offensive rhythm (shot 24% from the field and 45% from the free throw line) which prevented us from applying our pressure defense consistently.

Give Liberty Bell credit as they hit a lot of shots and did a good job preventing us from our transition offense.

Next Game:  1/31 @ Oroville
