Karle Pittsinger signs with UW

As a state champion in the shot put, Karle Pittsinger was being wooed by a number of colleges to enter their track and field programs. She chose the University of Washington because it offers the educational opportunities she is seeking after graduation from Chelan High School.

Senior Karle Pittsinger has signed a scholarship offer with the University of Washington Track and Field Team. “I’m pretty excited,” Karle said. Being excited is an understatement from a young lady who wasn’t even interested in field events initially.

Once she got into the sport and realizing that she could do well, her interest grew. “I like it now,” she says, and she is looking forward to this year’s spring sports program, because, according to her mother, Julie Pittsinger, Karle’s goal is to throw the shot put farther than it has ever been thrown in a high school track meet.

Julie, a past professional athlete and Olympian, said that no one sees what goes on in Karle’s world. “She is up at 5:30 every morning working out in the gym before going to volleyball practice and school.” The Pittsingers have set up a gymnasium at home and Karle is lifting 250 pounds. The joke this past spring was that Karle was out lifting her father Brett.

But Karle has told her parents emphatically that she doesn’t necessarily want to live with other athletes in college. “She has so many other interests like art,” says Julie.

Karle was being recruited by a number of northwest colleges, but determined that the U of W offers her the best educational opportunities and student athletic experience of those colleges trying to recruit her. Colorado, Montana State and a lot of smaller colleges were trying to get her signed.

Not only is Karle a two time Caribou Trail League female “Athlete of the Year,” she is also the All-Time record holder at Chelan High School for women’s shot put and discus, and she was last year’s State Champion in the shot put and second in discus.

As soon as the volleyball season is over, Karle will be traveling to Oregon for some track and field training with 1976 gold medal discus winner, Mac Wilkins. “He feels that Karle has enough personality and looks to actually change the perception of the throwing events in track and field,” said proud mom Julie.

Who knows… Karle could be end up becoming an Olympian in the future.
