Chelan played tough defense all day long in their losses to Cascade and Brewster.

Chelan softball team loses two to close games to finish season

The Lady Goats came into the District Championships a clear underdog in game one against the CTL League champions, Cascade and gave the Kodiaks a tough game that ended with Cascade winning the closest game they had this season 5-3. If it hadn’t been for a throwing error that scored two unearned runs for the Kodiaks, it’s possible that Chelan could have upset them.

Chelan is a young team while Cascade fielded six experienced seniors. Amanda Reeves got the start and pitched the entire game. She gave up only two earned runs on five hits with zero strikeouts and four walks.

The defense played well. Courtney Dietrich got a workout in center field.

Offensively, Chelan had only three hits against the best pitcher in the league, but the ladies were able to put the ball into play. Amanda Reeves had a sacrifice fly for an RBI. Mary Fitspatrick and Samantha Frederick were 1-3 at the plate and Haily Habich was 1-3 with a double.

“I was happy with the batting,” said Coach Jeff Barker. “The girls all put the ball into play.” He went on to say that the young Chelan team didn’t match up well with Cascade, but was very happy with the game the girls played.

As the loser, Chelan traveled up to Mtn. Goat field to take on Brewster who was defeated by Okanogan. “They are a run and steal team, but if we play like we did against Cascade, we can beat them.”

The game against Brewster was for the third slot to the Bi-District Tournament to decide who would continue on to State. “This game was a back and forth battle right down to the seventh inning,” said Coach Barker. Brewster ended up with a 10-9 win, ending Chelan’s softball season.

Aleea Ferguson started in the circle for this game and had somewhat of a rough time giving up seven earned runs on 12 hits with zero strikeouts and three walks. Barker pulled Aleea in the bottom of the fifth and put Amanda in with two out to finish the game. Amanda gave up one earned run on two hits.

Chelan had five errors in the game. “This really hurt our cause,” said Barker.

Offensively, the Lady Goats had nine hits with singles from Amanda Stewart, Courtney Dietrich and Amanda Reeves. Samantha Frederick went 2-3 at the plate and both Mariela Galvan and Lindsey Brownfield were 2-4. Brownfield had a 2 run RBI.

Barker was very proud of his teams efforts and how they battled to stay in the game. “We played two very good teams and played them with a lot of heart and determination,” said Barker. “You can look at how we played these teams earlier in the year and the games we gave them today showed the improvement we’ve made over the season.”

“I want to thank everybody for the support this year and again, this coaching staff was very proud of our Lady Goats today.”
