Chelan to send to Mat Classic including four champions

“We got seven in, but I would have preferred nine,” said Coach Jay McGuffin. “Not up to my expectations, but it is what it is.”

Coach McGuffin (this year’s Coach of the Year) was pleased that five of the seven state qualifiers at the Regional Wrestling Tournament at the Community Gymnasium made the finals and that four of them became the Regional Champions.

“I think we still have a good chance to take the team championship at State,” said McGuffin. “We should do really well at Mat Classic.”

Chelan’s regional champions include Erick Garcia (132 lbs.), Alex Cortez (195 lbs.), Asa Schwartz (220 lbs.) and Luis Garcia (285 lbs.). Also qualifying to compete at the State level are Juan Garcia (145 lbs.) who took second place and Bobby Anderson (182 lbs.) who took third place. The last qualifier was Julio Vera ( ) who came in fourth.

The Quincy Jackrabbits came up with the team honors at the Regionals and Chelan followed in close second place for the team honors.

There were some really tough matches and Mat Classic will test Chelan’s wrestlers against the best of the best in this state at each weight class.

Erick Garcia (132 lbs.) began his day against Justin Lauderdale of Lakeside and scored a pin at 4:32 of the 6 minute match to move closer to the championship and ended up in the finals against Ethan Visser of Cashmere, defeating him 7-0.

Alex Cortez (195 lbs.) pinned Riverside’s Brian Lee in 3:10 of his first match and then pinned Tonasket’s John Rawley in :50 seconds of his second match to make the finals. In the finals, Cortez battled to a 5-0 decision over Omak’s Jacob Cutrell, a wrestler he has been battling with over the years.

Asa Schwartz (220 lbs.) won his first match against Newport’s Joe Luback in a 31 second pin. Then Kettle Falls wrestler Tyler Vinning forfeited his match to Asa because of an earlier injury which put Schwartz against Teigan Glidewell in the finals. Schwartz won this match for the championship in 2:24 by pin.

Luis Garcia (285 lbs.) was on the mat for a short 15 second pin against his first opponent, Bobby Sohl of Kettle Falls. Tanner Good of Tonasket fell to Luis by pin in 1;06 of that match, setting up Garcia for a championship match against Dustin Olson of Chewelah. Garcia got him by pin in 1:21 of the first round. It became obvious that if Garcia throws you to the mat, you are stuck there. It is over.

Juan Garcia (145 lbs.) got into the finals by pinning Freeman’s Konner Forshag in 2:55 and then Marcos Fonseca of Okanogan by pin in 2;46. Isias Jiminez of Quincy was able to beat Garcia in a close 5-4 decision to take the championship away, but Garcia will represent Chelan at the Mat Classic as a second place finisher at the Regional Tournament.

Bobby Anderson (182 lbs.) won his first match in a 7-4 decision over Sebastian Hyta of Freeman and then lost a tough 10-3 decision to Adam Collins of Chewelah bumping him into a battle for 3rd and 4th. He beat his first opponent, Steven Gomez 7-3 and then won the third place slot by beating Austin Knowlton of Tonasket 4-2.

Julio Vera (126 lbs.) took fourth place and will also represent Chelan at the State Championships.
