Chelan’s McClellan hits a three pointer at the
buzzer to claim an exciting 44-43 victory over Cashmere

Win puts Chelan into third place in hotly contested CTL
by Richard Uhlhorn

With only seconds to play in a tight game Coach Joe Harris said after Chelan’s one point win over Cashmere, “I told them to keep fouling, keep fouling, keep fouling and we will get a three point shot to celebrate.”

With only 2.1 seconds on the clock, the Goats came out of a timeout huddle ready to get one last shot to tie the game or win it.

Mason McClellan drove under the baseline while Jared Anderson looked for a pass in. McClellan ended up in position just beyond the arc and put the ball up for a swishing three pointer and the 44-43 victory over the astonished Bulldogs.

Over the years, Coach Harris and his teams have been in similar situations with Cashmere as the clock wound down to the final second. Last night’s game (Tuesday, February 4) was just another reminder of how exciting high school basketball can be when played at the level Cashmere and Chelan played.

On the way out of the gym, I spoke with Cashmere’s coach who said, “Tough loss but that was a fun game.”

During the first quarter of play, it looked like Chelan was in for a tough night on the basketball court. Cashmere was using all the pressure they could bring to bear on the Goats and it worked with Chelan turning the ball over and the Bulldogs taking an 18-7 lead by the end of the first quarter.

At the break, Chelan was down eight points. By the end of the third quarter, the Goats were still down, but only by six.

With 4:06 remaining and Chelan challenging the Bulldogs, Cashmere took a timeout. The score at that point in the game was Chelan 35 – Cashmere 39. Hank Hollingsworth was having a great game underneath as the rest of the team fed him at the post, narrowing Cashmere’s lead to only two points with two minutes remaining.

Chelan took a timeout with the score 39-41 and only 1:55 remaining to play, Chelan stayed within two points, 41-43.

Chelan took a timeout with only 7.8 seconds remaining and the score 43-41 in favor of Cashmere. The Bulldog fans were relishing another victory over their arch rivals when Chelan forced some fouls in hopes of misses and getting the ball back.

Cashmere went to the free throw line with six seconds on the clock. The player missed his front end and Chelan rebounded, brought the ball past mid-court and Harris called a timeout with 2.1 seconds on the clock. The rest is history. Mason McClellan hit the three pointer and the victory went to an elated Chelan team and fan base.
