Spring sports are underway and Head Track Coach Skip Boyd is excited about the 2013 track season. “We are looking forward to this year’s track season,” said Boyd. “We are coming off a building year from 2012 and the coaches believe that this year’s team will be stronger in all events.”
Chelan will be particularly strong in the field events this year with a strong contingent of throwers in the shot, discus and javelin. Returning to the field is CTL Field Athlete of the Year in 2012 and state placer junior Karle Pittsinger. Karle and Asa Schwartz will help bring along some young exciting throwers in Emma Elsner, Melina Evig, Sarah Goyne, Erica Arias, Hyatt Johnson, Dalton Dietrich and Jose Padilla.
Senor Erick Oscarson and Junior Morgan Hawkins will anchor the sprinters, hurdlers and horizontal jumpers. Erick was a standout hurdler and sprinter last year and he pushed the mile relay team that came close to qualifying for state in 2012.
The mile relay team this year will have many boys competing, including Konnar Stevens, Mikey Flowers, Hyatt Johnson, Manny Munoz, Ty Miller, Lane Molina, Julian Buyas, Eli Dickes, Ty Schwartz and Tom Armstrong along with a few others. On the girl’s side, Morgan Hawkins and Daisy Campos were both on the mile team that went to state last year and this year they will be joined by a number of talented runners.
Possible competitors for the mile relay team, 400 m relay team and the 800 m relay team include Jenny Sundberg, Tarn Shaw, Drew Morris, Haley Holiday, Yesenia Pickett, Amber Santos, Kali Van Rensum, Rachael Hawkins, Bridget Wyant and Daisy Franco. All of these track athletes will compete at times in the sprints, hurdles, long jump and triple jump.
The high jumpers and pole vaulters have a couple returning athletes that competed well last year. In the high jump, Manny Munoz and Jenny Sundberg both made it the District meet and did well. A couple of young athletes that join the team from the middle school program are Lane Molina and Haley Holiday.
Pole vaulters will be anchored by Bryan Cadena and Matt Antonio. These two sophomore vaulters made it to the District meet last year with Bryan clearing 12 feet last year as a freshman. Daisy Franco is joining us from the middle school program where she cleared eight feet. Ty Miller is showing some interest in joining the vault team, so it should be an exciting time in both the pole vault and high jump.
The distance crew is always strong and with returning senior Marissa Palazzo as the leader in the mile and two mile distances. Marissa led all distance runners last year and she is looking forward to running with her teammates Jeannette Menesses, Jessica Galvan, Daisy Campos, Yesenia Pickett and Caitlin Hunt. The boys running distance this year will be Ivan Reyes and Gio Reyes with a couple of others who cross over to run in the 800 m run for the Chelan team.
Chelan will host its first home track meet on March 26 beginning at 3:30 p.m. at Sargent Field. Dave Hellyer will be return as the starter this year for the meet. Dave has performed as a starter for the past 20 years and the team is happy to have him back.
Volunteers are always welcome. If interested, call Athletic Director Rob Rainville at 682-4061.
