Seniors Eleazar Galvan and Erick Garcia will continue on to college next year. Eleazar will play soccer at Skagit Community College for a year before hopefully moving up to a four-year college and Erick will attend Highline Community College on a wrestling scholarship. Chelan will miss their obvious soccer talents next year.

Soccer team brings home the gold
by Richard Uhlhorn

It was a goal they worked toward all year long and it all came together on May 25 when the Chelan Goat Soccer team under Coach Jaimie Richards brought home Chelan’s first State Soccer Title after beating Seattle Christian in the 1A championship game at Sunset Chevy Stadium in Sumner, Washington.

The Goats were relentless in accomplishing their goal this year, losing only two games; one to Eastmont and another to Quincy in a shootout, ending up the season with a 12-2 record.

In the championship game, the team came out running hard and it only took two minutes before Chelan senior star Eleazay Galvan scored Chelan’s first goal.

The goal came off of a foul outside Seattle Christian’s box. Seattle Christian was slow to drop back and set up for the free kick and Eleazar took a quick one to find the back of the net.

Twenty four minutes into the game, Seattle Christian tied the game up when they had a free kick outside of Chelan’s box. The ball deflected off the Chelan wall and bounced over the Goalkeeper Miguel Sanchez as he was diving to make the save.

With the score at 1-all, Erick Garcia beat a few players and put the ball in for a goal one minute later to give the lead back to Chelan. Erick found the back of the net again with a beautiful right footed shot to the side netting of the far post with only two seconds remaining in the first half to seal the score at 3-1.

“The team just kept getting better every single day,” said Assistant Coach Jim Broome. “They played excellent soccer in the championship game and never gave up. They have achieved all their goals for the season.”

Coach Jaimie Richards is losing nine seniors this year, but is confident that his younger players will carry the torch forward next year.

Senior Eleazar Galvan is going on to college and will play soccer for Skagit next year. “The University of Washington and several other large four-year colleges want him, but their entrance criteria made it impossible for him to get in. So he’ll play for a year at Highline and then move up,” said Coach Richards. Galvan was on a Sounders Feeder team last year.

Erick Garcia, Chelan’s other senior star will be attending Highline Community College on a wrestling scholarship. As a state champion in wrestling, Garcia is looking forward to wrestling with one of the better community college wrestling teams in the country.

Congratulations go out to the entire Soccer team for a great year of soccer.
