If ducks were golfers, they would have enjoyed this year’s State 1A Golf Championships. As Coach Kirk Einsphar said, “Ducks of all types were frequently seen on the course today as the heavens opened up and poured rain most of the day.”

Neither the boys team or girls team were able to vie for a team title because two players have to make it into the final day for consideration of team awards. Golf results can be found on the WIAA website

Sam Cooper came into day two tied for 11th place in the remaining field fo 21 girls who made the second day cut. Sam shot a 44/44 on day two which was a career-best front nine for her, but she struggled on several holes on the back nine and came in with a 44 and tied her career best of 84 with an overall 172 for the two days of competition finishing in seventh place and improving on her 17th place last year. Congratulations Sam.

On the boys side, Ian Cowell came into second day play tied for 25th place., finishing the front nine with a 3-over par 39. “We were hopeful that he would come in with an overall score in the 70s where he had been scoring all season long,” said Einsphar.

A combination of weather, puddles and bad breaks had Cowell finishing the back nine with a 42 for an 81 on the day and 163 for the two days and 23rd in the State. Last year, Ian tied for 49th.

“All in all it was a great tournament for our teams and a great experience for all the players who qualified for the state tournament. “I’m very proud of all six players who made it to the State Tournament.”
