“I knew Tonasket was going to be tough,” said Coach Jay McGuffin after his team escaped with a 40-30 team win over the Tigers.

“We did some of our best wrestling of the season.” The Chelan Goats are currently ranked No. 2 in the State 1A rankings. There is only one reason for this ranking… the Goats have taken on the best in the State and consistently win or almost win tough tournaments.

They are led by some serious wrestling competitors including Eric Garcia, Alex Cortez, Asa Schwartz and Luis Garcia, all of who are looking forward to wrestling for the gold at the upcoming Mat Classic in Tacoma in February.

To get to Mat Classic, however, the team has to battle its way through a tough Regional competition that will take place in Chelan in early February.

On Saturday, January 19, the Goats faced off at home against the Tonasket Tigers for an afternoon duo.

The pivotal match of the afternoon was between junior Chris Truini and Tonasket senior Dalton Wahl. The Tonasket coach moved Wahl up a weight class with the idea that Truini would be easier to beat than Erick Garcia at 138 pounds.

Wahl, who had beaten Truini earlier in the year, found himself in a very difficult match. At the end of the first of the three rounds, the two wrestlers had grappled to a 2-all tie. In the second round the two ended up in a 6-all tie and then with only :43 seconds remaining in the third round, Truini was able to pin Wahl to add another six points to the Goat team score.

“It was the match of the evening,” said Coach McGuffin.

The afternoon’s match began at 182 pounds and Tonasket got on the board quickly with Frank Holfelz pinning freshman Pedro Venegas with 13 seconds remaining the first round.

At 195 lbs., Alex Cortez came out battling John Rawley and dominated this match, scoring a 12-2 major decision to get Chelan’s ball rolling. Asa Schwartz drew a forfeit at 220 lbs. and then Luis Garcia at heavyweight pinned Tonasket’s Tanner Good with 1:02 remaining in the first round.

The match jumped down to Angel Hernandez at 106 lbs. and he was able to get a pin on Rade Pilkinton in the second round. AT 120 lbs. Ivan Reyes lost his match to Colin Aitcheson 2-6 and Justin Buyas at 126 lbs. was also pinned by senior Jeffrey Shedtfeld.

Freshman Julian Buyas (132 lbs.) battled Dyllan Walton and lost in a tough 2-4 decision.

Erick Garcia (138 lbs.) pinned Derek Rimestad (145 lbs.) in that switchover in weights by the Tonasket coach. Juan Garcia (also at 145 lbs.) got a pin in the second round to help lift the Goats to a team victory.

Jose Ruiz (160 lbs.) was pinned by Tonasket’s Austin Booker with 44 seconds left in the second round, but Bobby Anderson (170 lbs.) came out in the final match of the evening and lifted Chelan to the win 40-30 with a pin over Austin Knowlton.

The Chelan Wrestling team is facing off against the Cascade Kodiaks on Friday night beginning at 5 p.m. It is senior night for the Chelan Wrestlers.
