On September 9th at approximately 11:30 am the Trojan Football team departed Manson en route to Ilwaco, WA. Ilwaco is located in the southwest corner of the state, right on the ocean. We arrived in Ilwaco at about 8:00 PM and set up camp in their school/training facility. The next morning we traveled to the ocean's shores and hung out on the beach for a couple of hours before our scheduled 1:00 PM, Saturday football game. The weather was amazing and the Ilwaco coaching staff was very hospitable.

The game was very physical and was the first competitive action for the Trojans in 2011. We brought 20 players on the trip and suited 18. 9 players didn't make the trip due to eligibility issues and injuries. The first quarter was very evenly matched with the possessions going back and forth and neither team able to move the ball effectively. It ended with the score being tied at 0 to 0. The second quarter opened with a solid scoring drive by Ilwaco. Both teams dealt with a large amount of turnovers but Ilwaco did a better job of capitalizing on our turnovers. In the first half we turned the ball over 2 times and Ilwaco scored touchdowns on both turnovers. The first half ended with the score Ilwaco 14 and Manson 0.

The second half began very well as we appeared to be running the ball at will on shoulders of Javier Guillen. However, the opening drive was ended early with another turnover. We were able to get the ball back and put another solid drive alive which ended on a loss of downs, 4th and goal from the 4 yard line. Our defense really stepped up in the 3rd quarter and held Ilwaco scoreless. Our offense also stepped up and did a much better job moving the ball but we were plagued by turnovers and just couldn't find the end zone.

We entered the 4th quarter with the score Ilwaco 14 and Manson 0. Ilwaco was first to score in the fourth, set up by another turnover. About the midway through the 4th quarter both teams began to substitute with the score being Ilwaco 21, Manson 0. Everybody was able to get a little bit of playing time and we didn't experience any serious injuries. The final score of the game was Ilwaco 28, Manson 0.

The boys played really hard and the coaching staff was able to evaluate many players in several different positions. The obvious difference in the game was turnovers. We turned the ball over 6 times in the game and Ilwaco turned the ball over twice. Besides the turnovers lost, we also fumbled the ball 4 additional times, all resulting in negative yardage, but were fortunate enough to have recovered.

I would like to thank the volunteers that chipped in and helped with the adventure; Don and Jeff Vanderholm-Statistics, Kevin Cameron-Volunteer Coach, Kim Ustanik- pizza feed on Thursday night, Len England and Jim harding- for the use of their truck and cargo trailer. It was a fun experience and the team really appreciates all of your support.
