Coach Scott Ward reports:

Oroville 35 - Manson 29

The Manson Trojans hosted a strong Oroville team in our first home football game of the season.  We started the game by receiving the opening kickoff and 6 plays later we were celebrating our first touchdown of the 2011 football season.  That was a great feeling for the team and coaching staff after experiencing a shutout in the season opener vs. Ilwaco.  The opening drive was capped off by a 12 yard run by junior running back Jesus Lopez and the extra point was firmly kicked by freshman Jorge Tejada.  The remaining portion of the first quarter was spent by both teams trying to gain an edge over the other, but neither team wanted to give.  We had pretty good field position for much of the first quarter, but just couldnít capitalize against Orovilleís stiff defense.

The second quarter was owned by Oroville.  They scored their first touchdown on their second possession in the second quarter and we answered with back to back turnovers, both of which they converted into touchdowns by Oroville.  We need to do a better job of taking care of the ball in critical league games like this.  Turnovers will kill a team and we had 5 of them throughout the game.  We entered half time down, Manson 7 and Oroville 20.

The third quarter was a tough defensive battle for both teams.  Oroville had a total of 65 all-purpose yards compared to our 48.  Both teams scored a touchdown and ours was scored by Jesus Lopez on a 5 yard scamper.  The third quarter ended with a score of Manson 14 and Oroville 28.

The fourth and final quarter saw much action as Oroville scored their last touchdown and went up on us 35-14.  Our boys never stopped fighting though.  In the last 3 to 4 minutes of play our defense came up big for us.  The Trojan defensive front forced pressure up the middle and caused Orovilleís young quarterback to fumble the football.  Jesus Lopez picked up the loose ball and ran 66 yards for the touchdown.  That was the second defensive touchdown for Lopez for the game.  The first one was called back due to an inadvertent whistle in the 3rd quarter.  Senior running back Javier Guillen really shouldered the load for our team offensively in the 4th quarter carrying the ball 11 times for 74 yards.  With under 1:00 in the game we failed to convert on 4th and goal and the game appeared to be out of reach being down by 14 at that time.  But our defense came through one more time causing another fumble in the end zone.  Freshman Mike Pittman took advantage of the situation and hopped on the fumble giving him his first varsity touchdown of his young career.  The touchdown was capped off by a 7 yard run by freshman Jorge Tejada for the 2 point conversion. The last onside kick attempted by the Trojans was unsuccessful and the final score of the game ended at Oroville 35 and Manson 29.  I am very proud of the way our boys played and the toughness that they brought to the field.  I think that we learned a lot in this game and we will definitely continue to work hard and grow from this experience.

-Offensive standouts of the game were Javier Guillen 85 rushing yards on 17 attempts, Jesus Lopez- 32 yards rushing on 12 attempts with 2 rushing TDís and 1 defensive TD.  Kent Ustanik ended the game with 9 completions on 19 attempts for 112 yards, 0 TD and 3 int.  Marcus Vanderholm had 6 receptions for 73 yards.

-Defensive standouts were Jesus Lopez (3 solo and 4 assist tackles), Javier Guillen (3 solo and 3 assists), Marcus Vanderholm (2 solo and 10 assists), Luis Vasquez (2 solo and 6 assists in 3 quarters of play), and Alex Vanderholm 2 solo and 8 assists).

I would like to thank the community of Manson for their overwhelming support at the game.  Mansonís 12th man is amazing and we really appreciate it.  Our next home game will be against Entiat on September 30th.  We hope to see you all there for another great night of football.
