Goats take Naches Ranger 27-15 in hard fought game

By Richard Uhlhorn

It was another beautiful night for football and the Chelan Goats and Naches (Yakima) Rangers gave football fans everything they expect to see in a good football game.

“It was fun waching power football again,” said Coach Darren Talley after the game. “The kids did a great job… the defensive line was good tonight.” The Goats had senior Michael LaHaye back which helped Coach Talley relieve Asa Schwartz and Alex Cortez on the line.

The Rangers had to rely on their passing game because the Goat defensive line wasn’t giving them an inch when they ran the ball. The Goats still have some secondary work to do to protect against the pass. The Rangers showed up with an impressive passing game that included short, medium and long passes to move them downfield.

They were on the board first with a touchdown that came out of a pass, but their point-after-attempt failed giving them a 6-0 lead over the Goats with 6:59 to play in the first quarter.

In the second quarter of play with 8:52 remaining, Chelan got on the board and Bobby Anderson kicked a perfect point after kick to give the Goats a 7-6 lead.

It was late in the second quarter that Naches scored again on a 26 yard pass play. They also converted the two point attempt with another pass to put them back on top 14-7.

After the half, the third quarter was a defensive battle for both teams, with neither squad able to put the ball into the end zone.

In the fourth quarter, Zach Burchett scampered into the end zone for Chelan’s second touchdown with 9:45 to play. Burchett, a 5’10” senior is going to be one of Chelan’s play makers. Anderson tied the game at 14-all with a successful point after kick.

One of the Ranger players looked at the clock and shouted at his teammates that this game wasn’t over yet.

It wasn’t!

With the game tied the Goats defense kept the Rangers from scoring again and then withg 3:34 to play, junior Konnar Stevens ran the ball down the sidelines and into the end zone and Anderson kicked another point after to put Chelan in the lead 21-14.

The Goats once again held off the relentless passing attack that the Rangers put up to try and get back into the game.

With 1:51 left to play Konnar Stevens once again ran the ball 27 yards to add nice late game cushion to the Goats victory, taking the score to 27-14. Anderson missed this point after attempt, but it was all good as the clock ran down and the Goats held the Rangers to the end, taking over the ball with about 17 seconds remaining on their 20 yard line to run it out and claim their first varsity victory of the year.
