Low scoring game puts Chelan out of State Tournament

By Richard Uhlhorn

Chelan’s final appearance at the State Tournament in Yakima’s SunDome was not decided until the final minute of their loser out game against Onalaska. Onalaska’s Sarah Barnes hit a 3-point shot with 2:42 remaining in the game and Chelan was unable to answer in the final two minutes. The Loggers put the game out of reach for Chelan in the final minute from the free throw line, winning the chance to play for 4th or 7th place. It was a low scoring affair and the Loggers won 34-30.

In a Saturday morning interview with Coach Frank Phelps, he said all the teams at the tournament seemed to have a low shooting percentage. “I don’t know whether they changed the size of the hoops or not. I don’t know, but there have been no high scoring games.”

The Lady Goats had plenty of good looks, but the ball just didn’t want to fall and they hit only 11 of 62 field goal attempts and 2 of 13 3-point shots. From the free throw line the girls were 6 of 18. If two of these shots had gone down, the girls might very well be playing for a trophy.

Hailey Habich came up with a team high 9 points. Coming off the bench, Hailey has been very aggressive all season and isn’t afraid to put the ball up. “Hailey had one of her better performances yesterday,” said Phelps. “With the rest of the team struggling her efforts kept us in the game.”

Courtney Dietrich pulled down 13 rebounds, but was only able to sink 1 of her 8 attempts inside. She did better at the free throw line, sinking 3 of 5. Sophomore and playmaker Abby Phelps also had a low shooting percentage making only 1 of her 8 attempts and scoring only 2 points before fouling out.

Senior Danielle Smythe had only 3 points and 7 rebounds. Danielle is always good for points from the short jumper. Emily Schramm was only 1 of 9 for and 2 for 4 at the free throw line. Megan Robinson was 2 for 12 attempts and only 1 of 6 from beyond the three point line. Emily Schramm had 5 steals, but only hit 1 of 9 from the field.

For a team that normally puts the ball in the hoop easily, this game was difficult at best; for both teams. “Our defense kept us in this game,” said Phelps. “”I’m absolutely pleased with what we attained this year. Making the top 8 in the state is pretty good.”

At the beginning of the season, Phelps was faced with an unusually low turnout of seasoned players, many of whom chose to play only Club Volleyball. “We are just going to go out and play basketball,” he said. And play they did, struggling at the beginning of the season to becoming the comeback kids at the end of the season, beating Okanogan in Wenatchee to make it into the final 8 at Yakima.

“I couldn’t have asked for a better first year,” said Coach Phelps. “They are a pretty awesome group of kids.” Phelps is looking at next year… “If everybody wants me back,”

Losing only two seniors in Darcy Austin and Danielle Smythe this year means that Phelps and his very capable assistant coaching staff, Tracy Williams and John Penbarthy, along with Steve Stamps stepping to help at the end of the season. “I hope Steve returns next year,” said Phelps. “He is another set of eyes and he has a lot of basketball knowledge. He is a huge asset to the team.”

Chelan’s Lady Goats should be proud of their accomplishments this basketball season. No one expected them to attain the “Elite Eight” status and make it into the State Tournament. Congratulations… we’ll look for you right back in State Competition next year.
