Chelan loses game one to Okanogan 50-40

Take on Onalaska at 2 p.m. today

By Richard Uhlhorn

“The girls were disappointed with the loss but are ready to go today,” said Coach Frank Phelps during a Friday morning interview after the Lady Goats lost to Okanogan in Game 1 of the WIAA State 1A Basketball Championships being played out in Yakima’s SunDome.

The third quarter of play was Chelan’s big downfall. “They (Okanogan) got hot in that quarter and stretched their lead,” said Phelps. Dave Rogge, GLC’s man on the spot said, “Chelan couldn’t hit the basket in the second half. Courtney had a hard time under the basket.” To illustrate that, Coutrney Dietrich was 4-14 in the game and scored only 8 points.

At the half, Chelan was down 6 points, 21-16. Rogge remarked that Okanogan’s Megan Parks hit three 3’s in a row at the start of the third quarter. “We were down six and all of a sudden we were down by 15,” said Rogge. Eventually Okanogan worked out to a 21 point lead over the Goats.

“We started to come back in the fourth quarter,” said Phelps. After the Bulldogs outscored Chelan 17-5 in the third, Chelan came back to within 9 points in the fourth, but the comeback was too little too late.

Abby Phelps was Chelan’s top scorer shooting only 2 of 5 from the field, but making up for the low shooting percentage there at the free throw line, hitting 7 of her 10 attempts. She also pulled down 11 rebounds, 7 of them coming on the defensive end of the court.

Courtney Dietrich had 8 points and 15 total reobounds, 10 of them coming on the offensive side. She just had trouble getting the ball back to the hoop. Megan Robinson hit 3 of 5 three pointers in the first half but missed 2 attempts in the second half. “They covered her pretty hard in the second half,” said Rogge.

Emily Schramm had 8 points on the game and 2 steals. Danielle Smythe scored only 2 points out of 7 attempts and Hailey Habich added 2 points to the overall score.

“We are ready to go today,” said Phelps. “It has been our goal to play on Saturday, so we definitely want to keep the train going.”

Rogge watched the Castle Rock/Onalaska game prior to Chelan’s and said, “If Chelan has a good game they should push them out. They have one gal who’s pretty good and if they keep her under control it shouldn’t be too tough. I didn’t think Onalaska handled the ball that well, which should give Emily (Schramm) some stealing opportunities. Emily just needs more confidence.”

Chelan plays at 2 p.m. and GoLakeChelan will have the story shortly afterwards.
