The Chelan Wrestling Team qualified 10 wrestlers for the upcoming State Wrestling Championships in Tacoma this coming Friday and Saturday, February 17 & 18.

“It’s the most we have ever taken to the state tournament since I have been coaching,” said Coach Jay McGuffin. “It’s pretty amazing.”

After winning the District Title the week before, Chelan went into the Regional qualifier for the State tournament with high hopes of doing well. They did very well, qualifying 10 wrestlers for the big show in the Tacoma Dome on February 17 and 18. The team placed second as a team at the Regional Tournament, losing by only 10 points to Colville. “I can care less that we lost to Colville,” said McGuffin. “Next week is where you take home the hardware.”

Defending State Champion Cole Schwartz not only won the championship at the Regional Tournament, he was named Regional Wrestler of the Year. “Every since Cole was caught on his back at the beginning of the season, no one, and I mean no one has come close to giving him a good match,” said McGuffin.

At 126 pounds, Erick Garcia won the Regional championship also and is committed to win it all at the Mat Classic.

Assistant Coach Randy McGuffin remarked on Monday that Cole Schwartz hasn’t had a real match all season. “I don’t think he’s wrestled over two minutes in a match yet,” said Randy.

Alex Cortez forfeited to Cole in the championship match and took second place; at 285 pounds Luis Garcia lost a close match 10-7 and took second place also; third place finishes went to Juan Garcia, Billie Poppie, Asa Schwartz, and Jose Aparicia; and Alby Paz took fourth for the final Chelan wrestler to qualify for state. Bobbie Anderson will go as an alternate at 170 pounds.
