By Richard Uhlhorn

The Chelan Goats basketball season ended last Saturday night in Cashmere when the Cascade Kodiaks emerged from a very close game with a three point advantage over the Goats, 61-58.

At the buzzer, Matt Robinson put up a shot from way beyond the three point line that would have tied the game. The ball had a too flat trajectory and hit the back rim of the hoop and came out ending Chelanís quest to continue post season play.

Erick Oscarson broke his scoring record with a team high 21 points followed by Tyler James with 16 and Matt Robinson with 7 points. Sophomore Kai Clausen came up from the JV squad and had a real impact on Chelanís game scoring 6 points but working well on defense.

The game began with Chelan going out to a 9-4 lead and in the last minute of the first quarter of play, Chelan was up 20-10. The first quarter ended  with Chelan out front 11 points, 23-12.

By the end of the second quarter of play, Cascade, who had been down as much as 12 points, began a come back and the first half ended with Chelan in front 34-28.

Halfway through the third quarter, Chelan found itself in a new game when Cascade tied it at 39-all. Both teams battled from that point on and at the end of the third, Chelan was down by one, 43-44.

In the fourth quarter, Cascade held Chelan from scoring in the first several minutes and went up 48-43, but Chelan came back with two quick buckets by Tyler James and Erick Oscarson to get Chelan back to within three points 47-50 with 3:51 remaining in the game.

Cascade took a timeout with 31 seconds remaining with the score 57-60 in favor of Cascade. Oscarson went to the line and hit only one of two shots to bring Chelan back to within one point.

With 1.9 seconds remaining, Chelan took a timeout, came back in and fouled Cascade in hopes of getting the ball back. Cascade shooter missed the first free throw and then added a point on his second attempt to give Cascade the three point edge.

With only 1.6 seconds remaining on the clock, Chelan had one chance to tie the game and it almost happened when Kai Clausen launched his three point attempt, just missing the tying bucket.

Chelanís season ended with Cascade winning 61-58.

It was an exciting game and the Chelan fans were not disappointed in the effort that the Goats put into it. It was a tough season, but the Goats deserve congratulations for always playing their hearts out.

With only three seniors graduating this year, Coach Joe Harris has a good chance of reloading next year with a talented group of kids.
