The Chelan Goats came alive at the beginning of the third quarter to go on a 7 point run to overcome a 5 point deficit they went to the locker room with at the break.
With the opening third quarter score 30-25 in favor of the Pioneers, Tyler James opened with a field goal under the basket. Back on defense, Chelan forced a defensive turnover and Erick Oscarson scored a field goal and was fouled for his effort. He had a chance to tie the game up but missed his shot from the free throw line.
With Chelan ahead 33-32, Omak’s coach called a time out with 4:30 remaining to play in the third in an effort to refocus the team. Chelan continued to pump in the points scoring another 9 points before the buzzer ended third quarter while allowing Omak only 4 points, taking their lead out to 42-36.
Omak kept it close in the fourth quarter but Matt Robinson hit a huge three pointer to keep Chelan solidly out front. At one point late in the fourth, Omak got to within 3 points, but Oscarson nailed two free throws with 43 seconds remaining to play to take Chelan out to 53-47.
Tyler James pulled down a rebound, passed the ball off to Oscarson who was immediately fouled by Omak. He missed both shots from the line. Then James was fouled and he also missed his two shots from the line.
Omak was fouled and had a chance to get within 3 points again but missed one of their shots from the line. The game ended with James at the free throw line, missing the front end but hitting the final shot which gave Chelan a 54-49 victory.
Prior to the game Coach Joe Harris commented that the team was playing well. He lauded Misael Arechiga’s play off the bench. “I like him. He’s our best defender. He’s quick and makes things happen for us.” Arechiga had 5 points on Friday night. Frankie Rosas and Kyle Johnson also added 5 points each to the final score. Tyler James had 14 points and pulled down a number of rebounds.
For those wondering about when Michael Amsel Jr. will be back in action, the official word is that he has been suspended from his athletic endeavors until further notice and may not be back at all.
Chelan will face the Cashmere Bulldogs on Tuesday night, January 10.
When asked about Virginia, Coach Harris remarked that they now have a 14-1 record and had beat Miami on the 7th. “Joe had a bad game. I think the team was pretty tired, but they pulled out a one point win over Miami.”
In the Sunday Seattle Times, Virginia is now ranked 21st in the AP poll and 23rd in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches poll. Virginia plays #5 ranked Duke this coming Thursday evening. The game will be televised on ESPN. It is a great chance to sit back and watch Virginia and young Joe Harris play. Check your listings for game time.
On Sunday, January 22, Coach Harris will travel back to Virginia to watch Joey play against Virginia Tech. “It should be a great game and it’ll be the first chance I have to watch Joe play on his home court.”
