Goats lose to Eastmont but show talent

By Richard Uhlhorn

Chelan lost its home opener to a talented 3A Eastmont Wildcat team on Tuesday, December 20, 60-35, but showed signs of raw talent beginning to coalesce into a team after losing several seniors from last year.

It was a “White Out” evening for the Chelan Goats and toilet paper streamed across the basketball court after Chelan scored its first points of the game and earned a technical foul from the referees for delay of game.

“We still have some problems with injuries from the football season,” said Coach Joe Harris. “But this will be a fun game,” he added.

Michael Amsel Jr. is recovering from a minor break in his foot from the football season and has only played in one game. Amsel is the leadership glue that will bring the team together and without him, the team struggled a bit on the offense.

Eastmont, on the other hand, brought a very strong defense to including a full court press on the Goats from the outset, which created a number of turnovers early. By the end of the first quarter of play, Chelan was down by ten points, 6-16 despite having a number of good looks at the basket. The ball was spinning off the rim and not going in.

Eastmont continued to put pressure on Chelan throughout the second quarter, but Chelan began to work itself back into the game in this quarter until the Wildcats went on a 11-0 run to lead the Goats 34-17 at the break.

The Wildcats continued to pull away slowly throughout the third and fourth quarters to end this non-league game with the win.

After the game Coach Harris said that when “you can’t defend and can’t score” a team will have difficulty winning. “We have a lot of things to work on,” said Harris, who feels the team will be ready for league action in January.

Chelan will get a chance to continue working on their game this Thursday evening, December 22, in the Toyota Center against Brewster. Tip-off is at 9 p.m. after the girls game.

Also, put December 28 and 29 on your calendar for the annual Chelan Hoops Christmas Tournament.
