Chelan wrestlers getting on track…win Cashmere Invite
As reported by Chelan Wrestling Coach Jay McGuffin
The Chelan Goat wrestling team competed against nine other teams from around North Central Washington and edged the Quincy Jackrabbits by six point to take the team title.
Chelan had nine wrestlers in the finals after a day of wrestling including both the varsity and JV wrestlers at 195, 220 and heavyweight wrestling against each other. “Our strength as a team is the depth and experience of our bigs,” said Coach McGuffin. “I knew we were tough up there, but even I didn’t expect the success we had today.”
The finalists on the day included Erick Garcia at 126, Billy Poppie at 160, Bobby Anderson at 170, Cole and Asa Schwartz at 195, Alex Cortez and Michael Lahaye at 220, and Jose Aparaicio and Luis Garcia at heavyweight.
“Overall we had 15 placers on the day, but not all of them scored points for the team which scared me a little more than everyone else when it came to bringing home the team championship,” said McGuffin. The JV squad doesn’t score points in these type of competitions, so it had McGuffin a little worried about the final team score.
Other placers on the day included: Cleider Guillen, 5th at 120; Justin Buyas, 5th at 126; Chris Truini, 6th at 132; Jairo De La Cruz, 5th at 138; and Leo Pastor, 4th at 170.
The Goats will compete in the “Best of the West” wrestling tournament in Pasco on Thursday and Friday, December 22 and 23 against 32 other teams from Washington, Oregon and Idaho in a team and individual tournament.
