Lady Goats win first Bi-District test to play Riverside Saturday in Freeman in a loser out game
By Richard Uhlhorn
Chelan faced a determined Quincy Jackrabbit team in their first Bi-District match-up at Chelan High School on Tuesday, October 30, for the fifth seed spot in Bi-District Play. Chelan won the match in three games, but it didn’t come as easily as it should have. The scores were 25-14, 25-23, 25-13
“They did what they needed to do,” said Coach Donene Hendricks. The team will travel to Freeman, just south of Spokane to play Riverside High School in a loser out game.
Hendricks has not seen any video of Riverside, but stated that they were similar to Quincy and from what reports she has had, scrappy.
Against Quincy, Chelan wasn’t able to get its passing game in order to set Courtney Dietrich in the middle as often as they would have liked, especially in game two where Quincy threatened to win the game deep into the score.
Quincy was ahead 20-22 before Chelan scored three consecutive points to gain the lead at 23-22. and then get to game point when Abby Phelps hit a huge kill shot from the side to take Chelan to 24-22. Quincy tried to come back and scored a point to threaten Chelan at 24-23, but Phelps once again got a great set for the final kill and the win, 25-23.
Game one and three had Chelan in the lead throughout despite missing some serves and allowing Quincy to score in double figures. Game one had Chelan out front 8-0 with the game ending up 25-14. In game three, the game was much closer, but Chelan did not allow Quincy to take advantage at any given point and won that 25-13.
Courtney Dietrich (This year’s ‘CTL Player of the Year’) continued her dominating presence at the net with 18 kills, 3 blocks, and 8/9 serving with 1 ace.
Makenzie Harris had 8 kills, 2 blocks, 8/8 serving with 2 aces.
Abby Phelps (CTL All League-First Team honoree) had 7 kills, 20 assists, 21/23 serving with 6 aces.
If Chelan beats Riverside they will continue to play for a chance to travel to the State tournament.
