Chelan rocks Tonasket with a 48-0 first quarter – win 61-7
The Goats play Newport on Friday evening in Newport
By Richard Uhlhorn
Coach Darrin Talley was pleased with his team’s performance last Friday evening against the Tonasket Tigers. The game was over in the first several minutes of high intensity football as Chelan rocked Tonasket to their knees with a crushing offense and defense that lead to a 48-0 lead by the end of the first quarter.
It was so devastating that both coaches agreed to allow the clock to run throughout the rest of the game.
“It was amazingly fun,” said Coach Darren Talley. “We don’t see that kind of action very often.”
Quarterback Michael Amsel Jr. tossed for 4 touchdowns and then added insult to injury by scoring a running touchdown to cap the first quarter. He was 6 of 8 passing for 176 yards and had 31 rushing yards.
The offense was spectacular. Kai Clausen racked up 56 yards of rushing and one touchdown. Luke Gleasman added 34 yards and one touchdown. Zach Burchett had one rushing touchdown and one 35 yard passing reception. Wide receiver Erick Oscarson had two reception for 73 yards, each cumulating in touchdowns. Wide receiver Tanner Hendricks hauled in a 22 yard pass for a touchdown.
As Coach Talley remarked in his weekly article: “Memories for the ages – and most of that was in the first quarter.” The seniors (it was senior night) will remember the game for years to come as one of the highlights of their impressive football careers in Chelan.
I asked Coach Talley where he thinks this team would be if it had the services of senior quarterback Michael Amsel Jr. for the entire season.
“I think we would be one of the top eight teams in the state,” said Talley. “From that point on you have to fight your way up the ladder.” He also feels that Cashmere is one of the top eight teams in the state.
Chelan will be playing Newport in Newport this coming Friday evening at 7 p.m. for a bonus crossover game. “The kids all voted to play this on Friday evening,” said Coach Talley. Apparently a few of the kids have SAT’s on Saturday.
Graduating seniors are Michael Amsel Jr, Zach Burchett, Alex Cortez, Luis Garcia, Mikey LaHaye, Dillon Morrison, and Erick Oscarson.
