Friday night September 17th; Oroville 47 – 7 over Manson

Coach Barnes reports:

Manson found out the hard way how physical varsity football is. We were bigger and stronger than the Hornets; yet they pushed around most of the night. I truly hope this week will be a real gut check for the Trojans.

I thought Quarterback, Nate Coggins showed a lot of courage and toughness.  He was getting hammered all night in the pocket, but; kept getting up. Javier Gillian again rushed over the century mark for the second week in a row, rushing for 130 yards and our sole touchdown.  Jordan Pittman turned his ankle to the second quarter and Marcus Vanderholm was speared under the chin on a swing route. Both players sat out the second half and are doubtful for this Friday’s league home opener against Bridgeport.

Having critiqued Friday’s film we know there’s a lot to work on. Film showed the D-linemen, nose tackle, Luis Vazquez and both tackles Travis Pittman and Alex Vanderholm getting great penetration into Oroville’s backfield, now we need them to start making more tackles and have the linebackers shooting in faster to finish off the runner. Free safety Kent Ustanik made a number of touchdown saving tackles.  Weighing merely a buck fifty-five, Kent has been one of our best tacklers.

Looking ahead-

Manson hosts Bridgeport Friday, kickoff, 7 pm. Seven new players become eligible this week. Thanks to all the fans for making the long trek to Oroville, Hope to see many fans at Friday’s game. I’m sure the Mustang’s are out for revenge after last year’s 27-26 over-time loss to Manson. We overcame a 20 point deficit in the fourth quarter to tie in regulation and beat them in OT. It should be a barn burner of a game.

Thanks for all your support, it means a lot to the players.   Coach Barnes
