5.28.11 Boys Track and Field awarded State Academic Championship
Manson Boys Track and Field team awarded
State Academic Championship
May 28, 2011
Manson had 2 athletes, Marcus Vanderholm and Casey Sorensen, compete in the Class 2B State Track and Field Championship this past weekend. Marcus was entered in the 1600m and 3200m races. Casey competed in the shot put and discus.
Marcus had a great meet. His first race was on Friday in the 1600. It was a tightly bunched field that caused some to get boxed in and others were forced to run out in the 2nd or 3rd lane to find space to run. Marcus ran a smart race and finished ninth and dropped 3 seconds off his personal best. On Saturday he ran the 3200. He was very patient in the race, not going with the leaders the first couple of laps at a pace that was way too fast. He slowly worked his way through the field and wound up in 8th place, earning a medal along with a 24 second personal best. This also earned Manson a point in the team standings.
Casey also performed very well. The discus was held on Friday morning. Casey threw it just a couple feet short of his personal best and wound up in 11th place. The real excitement was on Saturday in the shot put. He threw the shot almost 2 and a half feet better than his previous best. For a moment we thought it was going to be good enough to get him into the finals and garner him a medal. However, his effort came up just 2 inches short and was relegated to 9th place. However, that is outstanding as he was rated 13th going into the competition.
Congratulations to both on an outstanding season and state meet. We have no seniors on our team, so we anticipate having even more athletes qualifying for state next year.
The Manson Boys Track and Field team was awarded the State Academic Championship on Saturday in Cheney. The award goes to the school that has the highest average GPA (Grade Point Average) for all their athletes that participate in that sport. Manson's boys had an average GPA of 3.70 among its nine athletes.
The team consists of Alex Espinoza, Bridger Machus, Paul Toolson, Jesse Russell, Alex Vanderholm, Juan Chavolla, Ty Harding, Casey Sorensen, and Marcus Vanderholm.
The school earns a plaque to display and each boy a pin to go on their letterman's jacket.
Congratulations to each member of the team for their achievement!
