Saturday, May 21, was a huge day for Chelan tennis players competing in the District VI Tennis Championships at Eastmont High School.
Junior Matt Robinson, who had never played tennis as an organized sport before this year, won the District VI singles tournament. A huge accomplishment for Matt! Olivia Plew and Megan Robinson upset the number one seed in the semifinals and took second place at the District VI tournament. Both Robinson and the doubles team of Olivia Plew and Megan Robinson will compete at the State Tennis Championships in Yakima at the Yakima Tennis Club this coming Friday, May 27& Saturday, May 28.
Maghara DePaoli placed fourth at in girls singles play at the District VI tournament qualifying her to attend the State Tournament as an alternate.
The WIAA State Tennis Tournament is a combined A/B school classification which only the 16 best tennis players in singles and doubles qualify for. “A huge congratulations for Chelan’s state tennis qualifiers,” said Coach Rothlisberger. “State tennis is by far the most difficult high school sport in which to qualify for state competition. Only 48 boys and 48 girls in the entire A & B classifications will participate while most individual and team sports send hundreds of athletes to the A & B events.” Maghara DePaoli
Overall, the Chelan girls finished in second place at the District Tournament out of the 14 teams participating and the boys team finished third out of the 13 teams participating.
Chelan junior Matt Robinson dominated the boys singles bracket on Saturday, winning his semifinal match 6-2, 6-2 over Dylan Wolfe of Liberty Bell, and winning the championship 6-1, 6-1 over Warren Robertson of Cashmere.
The girls doubles team of Olivia Plew (junior) and Megan Robinson (frosh) faced the #1 seed Stephanie O'Bryan and Mikela Kowatsch of Cashmere in the semifinals. “The Cashmere doubles team finished fourth at last year's state tournament, and was the favorite to win this year, but Megan and Livi used great teamwork and won a nail biter 7-5, 6-7(6-8), 6-4.”
In the district championship match, Chelan fell short to the Cascade team of Tori Smith and Emily Vincent, also in a nail biter, 7-5, 6-4.
Girls singles player Maghara DePaoli (junior) lost a heart-breaker in her semifinal match to Rachel Riggle of Omak 3-6, 6-0, 6-4, but followed up that loss with a solid win over Noelle Parton of Cascade 6-2, 7-5. “Maghara's final match of the day was winner-to-state and loser-out for the final third slot. Again, Maghara lost another heart-breaker late into the night under the lights, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1.” The fourth place finish qualified Maghara as an alternate to the state tournament.
The girls doubles team of Clancy Courtney and McKenna Hawkins (both juniors) lost their opening match of the day to Cashmere 6-1, 6-1 and were eliminated. “They played their best tennis here at the end of the season, and have built confidence and momentum for next year,” writes Rothlisberger.
