The Chelan Goats are ready to play some football again and have high hopes of making it back to the playoffs. It is a task they should be able to manage with the return of most of last year's starting lineup.
Chelan hosts Vashon Island Friday night
Goat Tailgate Party starts at 6 p.m. behind the football stands
by Richard Uhlhorn
"We're excited to get things going," wrote Brett Pittsinger about this year's football season.
To that end, the Chelan Athletic Booster Club will host a tailgate party at Sargent Field beginning at 6 p.m. and will be providing hamburgers and drinks. Donations are welcome and go towards providing support to the Chelan Athletic Programs.
This will be the second year in a row that the Goats have hosted an out-of-league team from the Westside of the State. Last year it was Port Townsend and a game in which Chelan lost 26-0. It was a wake-up call to a much better team than showed up for that game. Subsequently, Chelan went onto the playoff rounds at the end of the season and forged a new name for Chelan football.
Vashon should provide the Goats with a challenge, but this year, the Goats are definitely up to playing and defeating any team the play.
Returning are some quality players from last year's successful team. Moving out of the backfield and up to a tackle position is Matt Pittsinger. "I'll play anywhere they put me," he said at the beginning of practice this year. "I'm there to help the team win games."
Michael Amsel Jr. is back at quarterback which means that wide receivers Aaron McQuaid and Robin Weathersby will have ample opportunity to catch some well thrown balls for long yardage this year. The three are excited about this season's prospects and fully expect to make the playoffs again this year.
Running out of the backfield will be the powerful Cole Schwartz and quick Matt Peterson. So expect this team to gain some nice yardage on the ground again behind a large front line.
Chelan fans will find out quickly how good this team will be this year. After Vashon, the Goats will face Connell and Cashmere, who by the way is still stinging from their loss to the Goats in playoff action. The Bulldogs will be looking for revenge.
GoLakeChelan will be back in force with Dave Spanjer calling the play-by-play, Richard Uhlhorn working the sidelines along with Tracy Williams and Dave Rogge.
