Matt Robinson, Chelan’s current quarterback, did a great job at the position against Connell. He worked hard and never gave up despite the final score. Michael Amsel Jr. will be eligible in two weeks to resume his position at quarterback when the team plays 2A Foster in the Seattle area.

Takes on Cle Ellum this coming Friday at home

Coach Darren Talley has no hesitation in arranging tough match-ups early in the season. Connell was last year’s runner-up at the State Championships and State Champions in the previous two years. Connell is the team that knocked Chelan out of the playoffs last year.
For Chelan to come out and play the Connell Eagles in their home opener in front of a home crowd says a lot about Coach Talley’s confidence in his team to match up.
If the first half of the game didn’t send a message to Connell, I don’t know what will. “I thought our guys on the line of scrimmage did a great job in the first half,” said Talley. They held Connell’s Hadley (the best running back in 1A ranks over the past three years) to only 41 yards in the first half.
Chelan was also able to move the ball offensively during the first two quarters of play with Matt Robinson at quarterback. “We had a few young mistakes,” said Talley. A fumbled ball on a simple play allowed Connell to score its second touchdown with only seconds remaining on the clock in the first half.
Both of Connell’s first half touchdowns came on long passes and Chelan went to the locker room down 14-0.
The second half saw Connell’s size and strength on the line hurt Chelan. “I had no substitutes I could put in,” said Talley. He’s waiting for several players to become eligible including Michael Amsel Jr. who will take over his last year’s position at quarterback in two weeks.
(The scoring breakdown from Coach Talley: Connell's Kade Eppich caught a Chandler Salisbury pass for 40 yards with 5:40 left in the first quarter, with Garrett Salisbury tacking on the extra point try 7-0 Connell. Connell's MVP of 1A the past two years Matt Hadley caught a 27 yard pass from Chandler Salisbury with less than one second on the clock in the second quarter. Garrett Salisbury kicked the extra point 14 - 0 at the half. In the third quarter Matt Hadley rushed for 11 yards and a TD, with 7:45 left on the clock. Garrett Salisbury adding one point on the kick making the score 21-0. Again in the third quarter with 4:06 to go Connell QB Chandler Salisbury ran the ball into pay dirt for the second rushing TD in the quarter. Garrett Salisbury buried the kick through the uprights Connell 28 - 0. In the final quarter of the night it was Matt Hadley on a 4 yard rush to the end zone. Garrett Salisbury's kick was good and the final score ending Connell 35 - 0 over Chelan.)
Chelan’s Matt Peterson rushed for 72 years on the night with Konnar Stevens adding another 58 yards. Fullback Cole Schwartz had 24 yards. Kai Clausen had 13, Bobby Anderson had 10 and Matt Robinson rushed for 7 yards. Robinson also completed 2 passes for 17 yards and no interceptions.
Chelan was led by senior middle linebacker Tyler Hood with 12 tackles and one QB hurry on the night. Cole Schwartz added 10 tackles, Matt Peterson 8 tackles and one interception, which Matt returned for 18 yards. Jose Aparicio had 7 tackles and one caused fumble. Asa Schwartz a sophomore (Cole's younger brother) had 7 tackles on the night, one QB hurry, and one caused fumble. Erick Oscarson had 6 tackles. Konnar Stevens had 4 tackles and one QB hurry. Zach Burchett 4 tackles, and one pass deflection from his defensive back position. Bobby Anderson had 3 tackles, one QB hurry, and one fumble recovery. JJ Perez had 3 tackles. Marco Cardona had one tackle, and one QB hurry. Jerry Isenhart, Kevin Morris, and Eli Jenkins all added one tackle trying to stop the runner up 2nd place in State Connell Eagles last year, and State Champions the year before.
Chelan will host Cle Elum at home next Friday night at 7:00pm kickoff. We will add another valuable two way starter in Alex Cortez who will have enough practices to play in the game.
As Chelan adds players like Alex Cortez to the mix, they will improve on the field. This coming week, Chelan will host Cle Elum with the kickoff at 7 p.m. at Sargent Field.
