The defending Chelan Lady Goat Volleyball Team led by Coach Donene Hendricks hit the court on Tuesday night in non-league action against the 4A Moses Lake Lady Chiefs and were able to pull out a three game win 25-18, 25-23, 25-19.
The Goats struggled at times and while leading in most of the three games, continued to let the Chiefs dog their lead. “It was our first game,” said Coach Hendricks. “We have a long way to go yet and beating a 4A school is never easy.”
In game one, the Goats struggled to pull away from the Chiefs until late in the game when they forged a 13-10 lead. “We had some trouble finding holes in their defense,” said Coach Hendricks. A lot of this was due to the exceptional, and sometimes incredible, digs by the Chiefs junior libero, Taylor Sonnenberg. She continued to dive and dig balls out that would normally be down for the point.
Chelan finally gained a foothold and won the game 25-18.
The win didn’t stop Moses Lake from working hard and Chelan found itself down 14-15 in game two. Coach Hendricks didn’t like what she was seeing, so she called an immediate time out to get her girls back on track.
Hendricks had to call one more time out when the Chiefs went up 22-21 to threaten the Goats with a win, but Chelan tied the game at 23-all and went on to win 25-23 in the toughest game of the night.
Game three looked like a walk-away in the early going when Chelan jumped out to a substantial lead, but the Chiefs never let down after their coach, Amy Utter rallied them to battle it through. Hendricks called a time out with the Goats in a 23-18 lead to stop a point run on them and the Lady Goats were able to finish out the game 25-19 to take the match.
Chelan will travel to Cashmere on Thursday, September 8, to play a non-league match against rival CTL team, the Cashmere Lady Bulldogs.
