Chelan Lady Goats roll over S. Whidbey opponents
By Richard Uhlhorn
Every year the Lady Goats travel to the prestigious South Whidbey Volleyball Tournament and every year they do well. This year, the Lady Goats went and conquered, winning the 16 team tournament for the second year in a row.
Coach Donene Hendriks reports that the team opened pool play against Cascade of Everett and won that first match 25-21, 25-17. Meadowdale was next to fall to the Goats 25-23, 25-20. Omak, the only other school from NCW to compete at the tournament, fell to Chelan 25-14, 25-8. That win put Chelan into the semi-final match against Edmonds-Woodway which Chelan dispatched 25-23, 25-15.
In the championship match, it was Chelan against Lynwood whom the Goats put down 25-18, 25-19, proving once again that the Chelan team is not only well coached, but a very strong team to contend with at any classification level.
“We had outstanding play from the entire team throughout the day,” said Coach Hendricks. “On occasion we battled with some inconsistent serving which we were able to overcome with great passing and defense.”
Courtney Dietrich, Clancy Courtney and Mandy Robison shut down Lynwood’s power hitters in the championship match. Offensively, Olivia Plew and Abby Phelps did a fantastic job of setting the ball for all of Chelan’s hitters to kill.
Defensively in the back row, it was Maghara DePaoli, Mckenna Hawkins, Darcy Austin and Alli Phelps digging the ball out and passing to the front.
On Saturday the J.V. and C-squads traveled to a tournament in Ellensburg. The J.V. took first place for the Junior varsity division and our C-squad placed 2nd. “It was a great day for our entire program,” reported Coach Hendricks.
On Tuesday, September 27, the team travels to Wenatchee for a non-league contest, with the J.V and C-squad starting at 6:00 pm with the varsity following at approximately 7:30.
Earlier in the week Chelan traveled to Okanogan to take on the always tough Bulldogs. All squads posted wins with the varsity defeating Okanogan 25-22, 25-21, 25-17, putting the team’s league record at 3-0.
