Will play Granger for third place Saturday at 1 p.m.
By Richard Uhlhorn
Chelan missed going to the championship game with defending champion Cascade Christian by one point. After leading by as much as 7 points in the fourth quarter, the game apparently got a little crazy with several turnovers that allowed Zillah to close the gap.
In the first quarter, it was Zillah that came out and made a quick 18-5 run with Chelan coming back in the second quarter with a run of their own, 20-5 to go to the locker room at half time down by two points.
It was in the third quarter that Chelan and Zillah played pretty even basketball with Chelan finally taking the lead 42-39 at the buzzer. In the fourth quarter, Chelan was up by as much as seven points before several turnovers went Zillah’s way. Then a late fourth quarter foul put Zillah at the free throw line with only 1.5 seconds remaining, which ended Chelan’s championship run by one point.
Comment from Tracy Williams at courtside
"This was such an incredible game from courtside. Nobody has anything to hang their heads about. We should all remember that these boys started way back in mid-November and are still playing in early March for one of only 6 trophies that the WIAA is giving out this year."
"The stars lineup right so few times, if ever, when you follow your school in sports. To play for a State Title. Who’s really better in a 1 point game? These players and coaches deserve so much praise for their efforts. They sure have mine! "
Chelan has a chance to bring home a third place trophy when they face Granger at 1 p.m. in the Sun Dome on Saturday, March 5.
