Chelan’s Lady Goats opened their fastball season against a strong Warden softball team and found themselves on the losing end in both the opener and nightcap, 6-7 and 7-14.
The Lady Goats are back under the coaching expertise of Jeff Barker who took a three year hiatus and agreed to come back after last year’s coach Anne Becker resigned the position because of work and travel issues from Wenatchee. Barker is well known in high school softball coaching circles as a coach who is well liked by his players and as a coach who brings out the best in his young charges.
In Game 1 on Saturday, March 19, Barker’s team played excellent ball with Dani Smythe going all 7 innings on the mound, allowing 12 hits, 2 walks and 5 earned runs while throwing 5 strikeouts. Not a bad start against a real opponent.
Before the last out in Game 1, Tracy said the girls had a tying run on third and the go-ahead runner on second.
Offensively, Cari Williams was 2-4 with 2 RBIs, Hailey Habich was 1-3 with a double, an RBI, a walk and scored one run. Dani Smythe was 2-3 with an RBI and scored a run.
Game 2 had Chelan losing 14-7. The team committed 6 errors.
Dani started on the mound and pitched 4 innings, giving up 9 hits, 2 walks and struck out 4. She allowed 7 earned runs. She was relieved by Cari Williams who pitched the remaining 3 innings, allowing 4 hits, 2 walks and 4 earned runs. She struck out 2.
Cari Williams – 2-4 at the plate with 1 RBI
