Jamie Richards has taken on the head coach duties of the Chelan Boys Soccer Team. Richards comes from the professional soccer world and will hopefully guide the team to the state playoffs this spring season.
Liberty Bell has hard time against Chelan soccer
By Richard Uhlhorn
I happened to catch the last half of Chelan’s opening soccer season against Liberty Bell on Saturday, March 19. By the time I arrived, Chelan was ahead by 6 goals and its new coach had pulled the varsity team and put the JV squad on the field to finish the game off. “It gives me a chance to let the JV players get their feet wet,” said Coach Jamie Richards.
Richards had also told his team to not score anymore goals against a much less experienced team. “I can’t see running up the score on them,” said Richards. Even with the JV squad on the field, the team was having no trouble controlling the ball.
Richards is new to Chelan, but not new to soccer. He played professionally with Wenatchee Fire in the 2005/2006 and 2007/2008 seasons and participated in the 2009 Arena Open. He also coached during this period.
Standing on the sidelines watching the JV team go after Liberty Bell, I was impressed with the interplay that Richards had with the players on the bench.
Raven Berman and Adinal Padilla both are excited for the season to get underway. “We should make the state playoffs this year,” said Berman. “It would be my third trip to state this year and that would be nice.” Berman went to state in cross-country and then again with the basketball team.
Padilla is a defender on the team and is equally excited to get the season underway. “This
Thursday will be a good one,” he said. On Thursday, March 24, the Chelan boys will have their first real test when they host the Manson Trojans at the Chelan Falls Soccer Field beginning at 4 p.m.
