Orting shuts down Chelan in opener 14-2

By Richard Uhlhorn

Orting has opened Chelan’s baseball season for years. Coach Jim Burbery and Orting’s coach have a great relationship and the season opener is more about having fun than anything. Orting has traditionally had a great baseball program.

In the early going of this year’s opener, Chelan looked good at the plate. Evan Reister opened his season at the plate with a 2-run homerun. “I had just finished yelling to Evan that they didn’t respect him and to give them some respect. Boy did he give them some respect,” stated Coach Burbery.

From the second inning on, Orting owned the game and ended up with a 14-2 victory. “Jake got tired and even though he was still throwing strikes I pulled him,” said Burbery. Aaron Schramm came in a relieved for two innings and freshman Jarred Anderson pitched one inning. “He was pretty nervous,” said Burbery. “He’d never pitched in a real game before.”

Coach Burbery believes that if the kids are having fun playing the game that they will be fine. “I believe we’ll be somewhere in the middle… maybe a little above the middle of the CTL this year.”

Chelan lost a number of senior players last year and earlier in the week, Coach Jim Burbery commented that he had only five experienced players left to work with. He has plenty of help to get this team on track for the upcoming league games. Assistants include Steve Kline, ex-Yankee pitcher; Roy Figuera, ex-Chelan Goat pitcher; Steve Flick, ex-Chelan catcher; and Kyle Nelson, one of last year’s players. Coach Burbery also gets help from Adam Hendricks and Jeffrey Quigley.

Stats:

Robin Weathersby – 0-1 walk. Weathersbey has never played ball before, but Burbery feels he is such a talented athlete that he’ll pick up the nuances of the game rapidly and be a big help at second base.

Aaron Schramm – 1-1 at the plate and 2 innings on the mound, allowing 4 earned runs on 5 hits.

Evan Reister – 1-1 2 run homerun. Evan is catching this year.

Tyler Hood – 0-3

Chelan only had two errors during the game.
