Chelan wrestling team sends 12 to Regional Tournament

By Richard Uhlhorn (as reported by Coach Jay McGuffin)

Twelve Chelan wrestlers will be seeking to crack the top four spots in an eight man bracket for the opportunity to represent Chelan at the Mat Classic in Tacoma in two weeks. “For us to have 12 wrestlers with an opportunity to make to state exceeds all of my expectations,” said Coach Jay McGuffin. “I’m very happy with how competitive we were all weekend… no one gave up or gave in. Everyone pushed the pace and used their physical shape as an advantage when the match came down to the wire.”

As a team, the Chelan Goats placed fourth at the District Tournament, but are sending the second most number of wrestlers to the Regional qualifier behind Omak who qualified 15 to move on.

Chelan came away from the District Tournament with two District Champions; Jorge Villasenor (152 lbs.) and Cole Schwartz (189 lbs.) both of whom are the team’s captains.

Villasenor won his District Championship with a third period pin over his opponent. “Jorge has put himself in a good situation by becoming the No. 1 seed at the Regional Tournament,” said McGuffin.

Cole Schwartz had a tougher time beating his opponent than Jorge did, but the win was just as rewarding. “Cole got down early to Dylan Green, a tough kid from Omak, but he did not give up or give in.” Schwartz was patient and waited for his opportunity. In the third period, Cole got a two point takedown which put him up in the scoring by one point. He rode Green out for the win and was able to secure the District Title at 189 pounds.

The following wrestlers will be representing Chelan this coming weekend in Tonasket for a chance to qualify for the Mat Classic which is one of the largest high school sport spectacles in the United States. If you run into one of them, make sure to congratulate them on a fine season and to keep working hard.
